Question tires

well in a few k miles I'm gonna have to put new tires on my truck, and on my budget (dumb college student budget) I'm buying them one at a time, so I'm gettin' started now. I have an '02 f-150 sport, 2wd, with no lift or anything. here's the criteria of what I'm lookin' for, could yall make some suggestions of what tires I should look at.

-LT series tires, no more Passenger tires.
-back two need to git good traction in the mud
-bigger and wider than the stock tires (do I need new wheels to do this?) and I have seen the tire size chart, thanks
-uhh I guess that's it

and what's yall's opionion of what will look good(pictures would be fantastic), and fulfill all the criteria?
any suggestions are welcome,
thanks
-woogs

I have the Cooper STT on my 95 150 and could not be happier. I am getting ready to b a 97 150 and will get them again. good life so far and only around $120 a piece for 31x10.5x15. I know that the 16's will be more but I never needed my 4x in the snow or mud after putting these on. Here are two links

I'm sure you will get alot of different opinions...so here is my 2 cents...
BFG AT KOs.

You can go 2 sizes taller and 1 wider then stock on the same wheels.. Here in Colorado, they go for about $180 each.

Go to www.tirerack.com to read all their comparisons, surveys and pictures of whatever tires you might want for your truck. you can spend 3 days reading opinions on tires if you like. Then you can buy whatever tires you decide on.

I'd recommend keeping all 4 tires the same type and size. Tire rotation is very important to get the most wear out of your tires. Your truck will look stupid with big mudder tires on the front and skinny highway tires on the back.

If you don't go offroad much, look closely at the Firestone Destination LE. I just put them on my Ranger and will put them on my F150 Lariat as soon as they are available in a 17" size (I hate these oversize rims!).

Rocky, the Destination LE is available in P265/70R17.
I was going to ask if you've ever tried them in snow but living where you do I doubt it

UH OH...Here we go...Now the bashing begins!

OK...So you have had probs with the BFGs. You like Firestone. GREAT! But leave the bashing for the advertisers and manufacturers.

Woogs is only asking for information, or in this case, people's experiences with what they use. I personally have never had an issue with Firestones, Yokohamas, Pirelli's or BFG's. But I prefer BFG's for the aggressive tread pattern in the AT KOs. On all tire brands I have tried, I have never gotten less than 50,000 miles out of them. Traction is a big factor for me since I do go into the mountains, and sidewall and tread ply layer numbers are even more important to me since I do carry heavy loads on a regular basis. ( Not as much tho since my divorce! )

Now I have been using BFGs for alot of years and haven't looked back since. BUT!!!! I haven't checked other brands lately just because I am accoustomed to rolling into Discount Tire Co. and slapping down $800 for a set of 4. So unless the others have added ply layers to their tires...I'll stick with the BFG's.

Now Woogs can buy what they want, and will only be happy after they have tried different brands and had a chance to compare them for their own driving styles.

Sorry to rant....Just hate bashing. (And no I don't work for BFG.)

I agree, BFG is one of the best tires out there!! I have run them on many different vehicles. I use the Long Trail T/A's on my 2001 4x4. Great tire. Good price at Sams Club too.

i was just speaking from experiance i have gone through 2 sets of bfg at and on my second set of dayton timberlines now
what i have found bfgs both sets no more than 40,000 each for 800$ set of tires that dont grip as good as my daytons
first set of daytons went 65,000 and griped like no tomorrow
second set is at 50,000 with about 3/8th inch left and both sets were only 625 out the door

My factory Goodyears went a whole 35,000 miles.
My T/A's were $530 out the door with road hazzard warranty and all.
I suspect that these should go at least 60,000 miles. I rotate them every 7000 miles.

Tofer76......What is the ply count on the tread and sidewall of your Daytons? I may give em a try if they have enough.

I've had the BFG All terrains on 2 vehicles now and love them. As soon as the tyres on my f250 wear out, I'll definately get another set. They've always been a great tyre on and off the road.

Just my 2c

thanks, I"m lookin' into all of those suggestions, and will let yall know what I decide, but now I have another questions, I often carry heavy loads, up to a little over a ton, and if I have bigger tires I won't be able to carry as much cuz the truck'll sink and hit the tires. so what do I do to fix this after I get tires, add another leaf to stiffen up the shocks or what?
thanks
woogs
p.s. I finally got pictures of my truck in my gallery

Many, many opinions on tires!

I generally let surveys influence about 60%.

For what its worth:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/survey....jsp?type=ORAT

With 22 million miles reported, that makes BFG better than the Bridgestone Dueler A/T in my book, but I sure wouldn't be scared of the Duelers either.

BTW, I just picked up some LT285/75R16D BFG At's at Sams club (I had issues with my stock 17" rims, one had a crack in it!) for $689 including full warranties!!!

Pretty hard to beat Sam's club, even if you have to order them (they don't charge shipping!)!

So, now I'm the proud owner of some 285 BFG's on American Eagle 16x8 rims!

Now I just have to figure out what to do with the LT265/70R17 BFG ATs and rims that I used to have on my truck, and still have 11/32 out of 17/32 after 25K!

I'll have to post some picks when the snow clears.

EDIT:

Looks like you need to do a copy and paste on my link.
