How to Protect Tailgate?

I'm already getting scratches on the inside of the tailgate. I have a bedmat to protect the floor of the bed but was hesitant to get a rubber mat to protect the tailgate since they all seemed to require some drilling to install. I'd appreciate any suggestions or recommendations.

Thanks,
Mark

You could apply some roll on bedliner to it. That would halt any more scratching and what not. You would just have to make sure the surface was prepped carefully.

or?

or you could realize it is a truck and treat it as such. sorry, just seems a little absurd to want to protect the paint on such a functional part of the truck as it is intended.

If you can prevent premature rusting, why not? I understand that a truck should be used as such, but you dont need the inherent drawbacks of abuse to ruin it.

What about Line-X or Rhinoliner? I'm sure they'd spray as much or as little of your bed that you want.

No need to pay to have someone do it. You can buy a quart of roll on Herculiner for like $50 or so. I undercoated my entire bronco with the stuff, and it only cost me like $90 for the entire job, and a few hours work.

Most people buying these trucks don't buy them just for work! I didn't buy a truck just to load the bed and ruin the paint!!! no way!! not for the kind of money these trucks cost! In fact, after over 2 months owning this truck, I have never put anything in the bed of the truck yet! If I get the slightest nick or scratch, I go nuts!! I have to get it fixed right away!! These are luxery trucks and a prize possetion to have and theres no way I would do anything to scratch the paint up, even the tailgate!! If you want to ruin a trucks finish and body...buy a chevy or dodge since there a peice of you know what anyway!

you can stick a rubber mat on with some double sided tape. the ones they use for emblems and stuff will be strong enough.

Take a look at the bedrug. Very durable and velcro'd in (no holes) I've got one and have no problems.

Usually the mats and t/g bedliner covers attach using the existing screws in the latch access cover. You shouldn't need to drill unless there is a need to hold down the mat at the bottom of the gate.

Line-X and Rhino dealers should spray the tailgate for about $50 bucks... why waste $50 on Herculiner and any other Roll-On when you can have the best.

Just my opinion.

This is what I just ordered. I think it will do the trick. Website said it was in stock so I should have it by middle of next week. Anyone ever try one of the Penda products?

I would lean toward matching your bed protection. Obviously if you go with a spray in liner, you'll get your tailgate done too. If you are using only a rubber mat for the bed, I'd try one of the gate mats.
