2002 Ford Ranger Starting Issues
#16
OK I had to order the fuel filter cause no one had it and I changed it and it still does it, the guy at the checker store told me that it might be that cold start valve, is that the same as the check valve? Where is this valve located at on the engine? Is it easy to change? They said I would have to order the part and it was going to be $13.75. Thanks for any help or information anyone can provide me with.

I've never heard of this cold start valve. I have to wonder if he's thinking about a temp sensor that looks at intake air temp.
However, your cycling of the key, on for 5 seconds, off, repeat this maybe 5 times virtually confirms a bad check valve in the fuel system. Your checking for codes pretty well assures that there is no bad temp sensor, or as the guy at checker calls it a cold start valve. At this point, I also doubt you have a leaky injector(s) based on what I've read so far. If it were me, I'd do the key on/off thing a few more times just for conformation and if this workaround solves the probem, I'd make plans to address the check valve issue.

Yeah I did just what you said this morning and after the 5th time of turning it on and off I turned the ignition and it fired up like it was supposed to. As for this check valve, Is it a seperate part that I can buy or do I need to buy a whole new fuel pump? I tried to look up check valve under fuel system parts and nothing is listed. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help on trouble shooting.

From what I read the check valve is in the fuel pump itself. Is this true? I know some vehicles have a check valve just before the injectors. in order to fix a faulty check valve does the whole pump need to be replaced? I'm noticing a similar probem with my 99 ranger hadn't thought much about it untill i read this though. Is this something that is going to get worse? does this mean the pump is on it's last legs as well? How long can you just keep priming the pump before it gives up all together?
