Looking for V8 motor

Hi there,

I'm looking to purchase 5.0L V8, computer, transfer box, gearbox to implant into 98 V6 Explorer. Could some one give me an idea on what the cost for those would be for some good ones? From Breakers Yard, or private sale would be fine.

Thanks in anticipation

I'd look for a complete vehicle to get all that from, I've had the thought to swap a computer controlled 351W in place of the 302 in my 93' F-Series, and from what I was told it'd be easier and probably cheaper to find a wrecked vehicle thats complete. That way you're not running all over hells acres to find whats needed.

Going from a V6 to V8 swap, I take it you are looking for more power. Like 1970 said, it would be easier to buy a complete wreck and get what you need, then sell the remainder back to a junk yard. Would probably be around $2000 to $6000 - depending on the damage and year/model. Its hard to find the total thing without just lucking up though. I would suggest talking to insurance companies. Leave your name and number with the adjusters - that way when they have an accident and they are going to total one, they can call you first and you can get it that way.

If you are looking for more power and have a few dollars to spend, I have another suggestion... It would run you about $5000 to $6000 for all the parts.

Also, I just remembered, www.summitracing.com sell a supercharger for your 4.0 that'll give you the performance that you are wanting and you'll save fuel when not giving you X a workout. Just another suggestion, it only cost around $3000 and it comes with everything.

Since '98's came with V8's and Firestone tires, you should be able to find that combo wadded up and transplant the parts one way or the other for v8 power.

Do you have the pushrod V6 or the Cammer?

If you have the pushrod motor, consider the supercharger. Much less fuss than the transplant.

Ooops

Thanks Guys, the main problem though is that because I live in New Zealand we didnt introduce v8 Explorers until 2000, and at the moment they are scarce because there are so few of them here, and even less wrecked. I would then have to purchase in the US and shipping across the pacific - sad I know but also limiting.

I was going to suggest buying a full crate engine and tranny from Ford - then buying the accessory brackets from a boneyard. Problem is - if you can't find any V8 Explorers in the boneyard - you aren't going to find the accessory brackets.

Ford used to sell the Explorer crate engines all setup - accessories included (alternator, p.s. pump, etc). They quit selling them about 6 months ago. Its not a problem finding all the parts - its a problem getting them to you and doing it in a costly manor. You might keep an eye on EBay. There are always crate engines listed on there.

Let me get some prices together for an idea I have, and I'll let you know. This will be before shipping, but it will give you something to work with anyway. One question - how much power are you looking for? Stock was around 210 - do you want more? Something like 300?

Love Power

Thanks Cobra,

That would be so cool. Will try and keep an eye out on ebay.

I love a bit of grunt, but it comes down to whether the old bones in the 98 Explorer will handle that. It has about 160miles on it at the moment.

Any help is appreciated help cobra

Don't worry - I've got a 97 that has 170,000 miles - and I'm dropping 450hp in it. You won't have any problems...

Awesome,

So would I have to change everything for the 5.0L to handle it all?

V/8 Motor

One thing to consider is that the 5.0 V8 Explorers are all wheel drive vs. four wheel drive. Having a donor vehicle would make the transplant easier.

Not all of them are AWD.

A donor vehicle would make life real easy for this type of project...

I don't follow - handle what all? If you are referring to hp - you wouldn't need to change much - no more than you will be chnaging to get the V8 in instead of the V6...

Changing

Thanks for all of the posts,

So would the transfer case, auto, and axles (all V6) handle the 5.0L or should I change those all for the V8 as well. A donor vehicle is not possible here in New Zealand because we didnt get the V8 Explorer until 2000. However I would envisage trying to purchase in the US and shipping back here.
