Flowmaster is LOUD. I had a (1 into 2) 50 series Flowmaster on my 2000 F150. The Flowmaster website claimed that the 40 series was louder. That was hard to imagine, because my 50 series was very loud (lol). It was too loud on long trips. It interfered with my music listening enjoyment (lol).

Gibson makes a good system that sounds good without being too loud. They sell bolt together kits that are fairly easy to install (uses the factory exhaust hangers).
I am happy with the stock muffler on my '04 Fx4 SCREW. I plan to weld a 12" chrome tip on the stock tail pipe.

I went with Borla ... a fairly easy self-install ... and love it. The sound is good, but not overbearing. The 100% stainless steel doesn't hurt either. That might come in handy in Oregon (?). Magnaflow may have an all SS, but I'm not sure. Once I got mine, I quick comparison shopping so I'm not 'up' on who has what.

I just got flowmaster 40 with dules out the back stainless 3.5" tips. Had it installed for $300.00. I have ran this set-up on 3 of the last 4 f-150's I have had. Had a lightning, kept that stock. I don't find it being too loud, but it's all up to what you want. My buddy runs the same set-up on a chevy, and he said I just waisted my money because mine wasn't loud enough. I havn't heard any real loud f150's that sill had some kind of muffler. Heard them without mufflers.....they are loud.

I just had Borla put on my 04 FX4 4x4 5.4L Supercab and I love it. Like Gordo nice sound not overbearing. At idle it is as quiet as stock, punch into it and you know it's there and no drone at highway speeds. $576 shipped to my door. Truck seems to run smoother since I had it put on. Maybe just in my head and maybe not.

I got MAGNAFLOW 3'' w/ 4'' tip...i got it because it was the less noisy and better power. I dont like trucks that make a lot of noise and they bearly going 10 mph. And just like BOOMER08 said, "At idle it is as quiet as stock, punch into it and you know it's there"
BUT MINE WAS $280 OUT THE DOOR

Like edman said, the Gibson is worth consideration. A few months ago I got the Gibson SI/SO Swept Side SS. The Gibson is especially attractive to those looking for a "family friendly" exhaust. Inside the cab, there is just a very slight increase in sound vs factory exhaust. On the outside, it is by no means 'loud' but definately sounds more aggresive than stock. It has a nice throaty sound that says "V8".

I installed it myself in about 1 hour with common tools. Cost was $425 from my local 4 Wheel Parts store.

I recently just got one of the first Magnaflow SIDO Dual Rear Exit exhaust systems. It was $480 to my door. The install took about an hour and a half, just cause I took my time, made sure everything was right. It sounds GREAT! I put it on at the same time as my Airaid intake, and they both made a difference. There is no drone in the cab, and it has a very nice tone to it. It is not much louder at idle, but you can tell its got an exhaust. It has a very nice note it once you get on it. I find myself listening to the radio less, and my gas mileage decreasing due to my heavier left foot. The sound is def not too loud, but just right I think. You can see some pics in my mods gallery.

Any problems with the installation? How's the sound? Obnoxious? Tolerable? Or just plain cool!

The install is the best fit and easiest exhaust system I've ever installed. The sound is a low rumble. Quiet at idle, not too loud when you get on it, You can hear it at highway speed but very tolerable. Cost--$459 list

I have a Flowmaster 40 Series SIDO, and I would agree that it isn't too loud. I wanted the loudest I could get, and thats what the 40 series is, without a glasspack or anything. At first I thought it was too quiet, but now I see that if it were any louder, highway travel would be uncomfortable. I'm happy with my exhaust, and haven't heard anything that sounded better (in my opinion).
