compressor cycling, not low freon

My compressor is cycling a lot when I have the heat on, and it's very loud. I had it checked out and it isn't low freon. They shortened the distance between the clutch and the compressor, but it still cycles all the time--about once every two minutes. This can't be good for the truck. Is this just symptomatic of this model, or is there something else going on? My truck is a 2000 Ranger XLT, 73,5000 mi.

It sounds suspiciously like the low side pressure switch on the compressor. You may wish to check that out.

I'm assuming since you're using the heat, its cold out. If the selector is in a position which allows the compressor to run (anything except floor or panel settings), and the weather is cool or cold, the compressor will cycle. Every two minutes isn't excessive under those conditions.

When my 94 (with over 240K miles) started cycling non-stop last spring (like 16 months without A/C in South Texas!), it flat out bit the dust. Freon is good but now it doesn't cycle, period. Not every compressor goes as far as mine did.....and I don't have 5 bilss to replace the compressor, dryer, and condensor, recharge, and I work offshore, so who cares for now.

thanks

Those are great suggestions. I'll check the low side gauge and if there's no problem, I'll just assume all is well. Thanks everyone!

my dads 92 cycles, i think its a dehumidifier feature, as my 86 f150 used to do the same in defrost mode.
