Steering Stabilizer problem

Steering Stabilizer problem
On my '77 F250, I had a steering stabalizer up front connected to the sterring linkage(obviously), but the steering stabalizer was hooked into the power steering pump. It had 2 lines going into it, I am guessing an in-line and a return line. It was leaking very badly. So badly that I was having to put in PS fluid at the end of every week. I called the local Ford Garage and they said that those stabalizers are not even made anymore and to go ahead and take it off making it manual steering. He said that manual steering is not too bad, but was the only way to go if I didnt want to have the leak anymore. So I went ahead and took it off. The steering sucks. It is so hard to turn any direction. Does anyone know what kind of stabalizer I am talking about? And if someone does, Where can I find one? I dont have the old one i took off so I would need a new one. If such a stabalizer does not exist anymore, anybody have any ideas on what I can do? This has been bugging me for a long time. Thanks.

You have a pre-1977.5 truck with a Garrison(sp) type power steering system. You have three options, keep the armstrong steering, get the old unit rebuilt, or go to a salvage yard and get a 1977.5 to 1979(possibly more years) steering system. I recommend the latter as parts are more plentiful and getting the old unit rebuilt(if you still have it) could prove to be pricey and these units were temperamental before they were almost 30 years old.

Well see heres the weird part that I still cant understand...... I have looked at every magazine dealing with my truck and it says that the arm that comes from the steering box that connects to the linkage is positioned horizontally to the linkage so it can move back and forth, right side to left side ok now on my truck I have the gear that goes through the frame and the arm that connects to the to the steering box is positioned vertically so it can move up and down, not side to side.......am I wrong? Is that the way it is supossed to be?

yes, that is the way it is supposed to be. My truck is exactly the same and I had to convert it to manual steering as well. I will be converting it to full power soon. You can buy the conversion kit on E-bay for about $800 it converts your steering to the 77.5- 79 style which is a million times better than the garrison unit.
