I dropped off my 99 5.4 this morning to have the PCM flashed/reprogrammed. We'll see if it makes any difference. It has started to ping pretty bad and I'm not getting any kind of CEL. Of course my dealer wants 80 bucks to do it.........

Have you gotten your results yet from the re-program? I'm wondering b/c I'm ready to send it to Ford and get the same thing done.

It did help. I'm not getting the ping as frequently. My next step is to take it to Jiffy Lube and have them do the injector cleaning system. I read on this forum that it fixed the last 10% of the pinging problem after the pcm was reprogrammed. I'll let you know what happens after that. I think the reprogramming fixed about 90% of the problem. Let me know how yours turns out.

So can you tell me what they did exacly to your 5.4 to make it stop pinging. i called the dilership and they never heard of it. If there is any more info you can give me so i can git mine to stop pinging i will try to replace the egr flow sencer. and cheak again for vac leaks. thanks

 

the reprogramming did work some, but I still had the ping. This week I put 89 octane gas in instead of the 87 I usually run and all is well. Absolutely no ping. I'm not sure how to make it run correctly on the 87 anymore, but I'm wiling to pay the extra 10cents a gallon for the 89 as long as I don't have to put up with the alternative.
