What motor is this ??

That is what one of the guys I buy parts from said too,but the problem with that is that the block has 460 imprinted on it between it and the bell housing for the tranny...And as I recall, the 428 is the same block as a 390,and the 429/460 blocks are the same...The engine I am describing now is bigger than a 390...I have 2 390s and they are both way smaller than the new motor...

The only other choice I could think of would be a MEL engine (the MEL and the superduty truck engines were the other two that had shaft mounted rockers) Although I thought C7 should have been the last casting number for those, although they did make them through mid year 68. But if you have shaft mounted rockers you do NOT have a 385 series engines as the 429/460 engines used canted valves and couldn't physically use a single shaft rocker system.

From midyear 1968 thru 1978, all Lincolns had 460 engines, and no Lincoln ever used an FE engine, or came with a 429 engine.
The M-E-L 462 was used 1966/68 on some models only, and only thru June.
Ford confusion: The first 460 was introduced in the 1969 Lincoln Continental Mark III.
The Mark III was introduced in April 1968..as a 1969 model.
There's no such thing as a 1968 Mark III.
However...the casting number for the 1969 Mark III's 460 engine has a prefix of: C8VE.
The Lincoln part numbers for non specific Mark III parts have a prefix of: C8VY, for specific parts: C8LY.

Bill what would the block casting number be on a MEL 462? We have a confusion here do to the block casting number he lists could be a 385 series engine but the description of the rocker arms precludes it being a 429/460 setup.
One other question La Machina.. where is that casting number you found? and was this motor actually running and together when you got it or did you get a short block and a set of heads seperate (thinking possibly someone has mismatched the heads to the short block)

sorry all,i just looked at the rocker arms again yesterday to verify as it had been a couple of years since i looked at them due to being in iraq and out of the state...i must have looked at a different motor when i saw the rod through the rockers...this does NOT have the rod...lol...now i feel like a dumba$$,but hey it gave me the incentive to work on the truck again...hahaha...thanks for the info...

I have 2 pistons that r messed up.Cylinder walls look good 7 and 3 was missing part of the top piston. Just the 2 pistons look bad and a few rings. So is this a ThunderJet motor ?And any 1 have any extra pistons lol Slick out
Did you get good infoemation on rebuilding this block. I did it once my self lost a connecting rod and a tacoma company did it the second time 20,000 knocking like crazy got it out the heads look good

A torque happy cheap setup for your 429! Install a 460 crank, with some truck rods, and stock dished pistons should yeild about 9.5-1 and gain 30 cubes. Pump gas friendly.
You will need an internally balanced crank for that C9 block.
Stock 460 pistons are cheap and easy to find compared to 429 pistons.

New question here for you Thunderjet4x4...I see that you list a '74 F250 4x4 with a 429CID...I have a '76 F150 4x4 with a 390CID that I am changing into a '74 F150 4x4 with a 429CID.(basically I rolled my '76 and the replacement body is from a '74)The problem is that I need a set of engine mount brackets for the 4x4 truck that will fit a 429CID...I was wondering where you got yours or what you ended up doing to swap to the 429CID mounts? If anyone has an answer to this question, you can leave me a reply here or e-mail directly to my mailbox at markdnelson_2@yahoo.com...thanks
