roaring in breather box

ive got a 98 ranger splash with the 4.0 engine im having a problem sometimes when i crank it i get a roaring sound in the breather box i can pull the top off the box while running and it stops . i also have a flutter at idle i can unplug the mass air flow and it smoothes up. sometimes it will die as soon as i put it in gear any help would br appreciated

I'd check for vacuum leaks to start with.

Have you tried posting in the ranger section?

i talked to a local mechanic he told me to clean the idle air control valve i took it off gave it a good cleaning with some carb cleaner that solved all my problems
