1992 AWD Aerostar with dual air
I just had a qualified garage recharge the air system with 4lbs
of compatable refridgerant (only 1.6 LBS was in the system). When I took it in I had only 78 deg front, 68 deg rear. After the system was charged and driven around the block a few times the front dropped to 58 deg. Today was a 90 deg day. The mechanic suggests that there may be a compressor problem but it would cost me $500 to find out (replace it). I believe he added some oil with the refridgerant.
So on a full charge, it is not really comfortable. Do you think I need to replace the compressor?

I'm on my second Aerostar. And quite frankly, we really like them. The notorious side to them seems to be, at least from our 2 is that the a/c system is something less than to be desired. I probably have close to 6k tied up in a/c bills between the 2 that we have owned.
The last time seems to have taken hold. No repairs in over a year. Knock on wood.

Your system may also be overcharged which will significantly impair cooling. I spent about 4 months fiddling around with the A/C on a '91 dual system. As mentioned on the previous post, you really do need the system pressures and ambient air temperatures to begin to figure out what is going on. Taking pressures is not as easy as hooking up gauges and reading them - take it from me. There are multiple factors involved in getting an A/C system to function properly and various combinations therein. I finally mastered mine but in the end I still felt it was equal parts, science, art and voodoo magic.
