Why are my rear brake shoes lasting so long?

I have 95,000 on my 93 AWD extended, even do some towing. I still have a fair amount of pad left on the original rear shoes. Fronts have been replaced twiced, seems to stop well. I guess I'm more braggin' than complain' but is something out of order here or do they just last than long?

Thanks,
Mark Biederbeck

Why are my rear brake shoes lasting so long?

Rear brake shoes or rear brake pads usually far outlast the fronts simply because the rear brakes do far less of the work in stopping the vehicle. A brake proportioning valve (brake combination valve on our Aerostars) is used to lessen the brake system line pressure to the rear brakes so rear wheel lockup is reduced under hard braking with a light load of cargo. Brief explanation.

Brake system is engineered to provide stopping power for a van that would theoretically carry the maximum payload while pulling the maximum towload - constantly. Since few of us max out our vehicles this way, the brakes are over engineering for daily use, hence they wear less than expected.
