Oil Filters, Mobil1 vs Motorcraft

Has anyone been able to positively ID the best filter out there? I've seen a lot of reviews which are mostly opinion. Is there any one site that shows hard data as to the filtration capabilities? I currently use Castrol oils and Motorcraft filters. I recently saw a Mobil 1 filter to fit my 5.4l expy for the first time. Tell me, is the $10 price tag really worth it? (please factual data if possible)

Thank you,

I don't think $10 is worth it. It may be the one of the best though, but is it worth the money. Factual data is hard to find since most manufacturers do their own tests and market them. Look at bobistheoilguy.com, they have some filter tests there. Lots of disscussion on the issue.

Motorcraft is good and has a good price. I use Wix since I can get them through a work discount for $2.86 each. Wix, motorcraft, purolator, or even supertech are good. I would trust any of them. I don't like Fram. Wix and Motorcraft have real good antidrainback valves and the Ford spec bypass valve at the base of the filter. Either one would be my choice for a Ford.

I really dont think the $10 is worth it. You're buying a name. If you want a good filter, go to Napa and get the Wix clone they sell, the Napa Gold. It's manufactured by Wix and even has a little Wix logo on the box.

Thanks guys, Your opinions mirror my own. I did notice that the Mobil 1 filter felt heavier in my hand, but was not as physically large as the Motorcraft I've been using. I have not cut one apart, but it seems that the larger filter case "might" allow for more surface area on the filtration media. BUT, this is only a guess and it would not take into account any quality differences in the filtration media.

Not worth it at all on these trucks. The OEM motorcraft filter is a well built unit, and its only 2.99 at walmart. This filter is probably the best deal in filters right now.

With that mobil1 filter you might even have some problems with dryknock due to the drainback valve design.

The new wix/napa filters are another excellent choice but they are 5-6 dollars so I stick with the tried and true motorcraft.

The Mobil 1 filter, and the Motorcraft filter elements arent really the same. Motorcraft manufacturers use a paper filter, where Champion labs makes the M1 with a synthetic filter element. The Mobil1 filter is a great filter......but overkill. Motorcraft does sell a nice filter. Like lots of others here....I'm a WIX/Napa Gold user.

$3.50........always $5 for me too. Napa Gold or WIX from Orielly's.........$5 either way.
