I got 92K on it now. Local muffler shop gave me the speel about the cats being only factory issued, illegal to put used ones on.....
the problem is an intermittent rattle/vibration from that area. I checked all the heat sheilds and they seem ok, so i assume its the cat. No idiot light on yet tho.
Ill look into the magnaflows.
thanks,
Anymore input is still welcome.

As far as replacing or upgrading the cats you would want to contact the magnaflow techs. I have a 98 f150 with the 4.6. Dont know for sure if my story here is the same as would be for the 5.4. Magnaflow told me that for 97-98 you cannot put high flow or low restriction cats on due to it throwing off the computer. For 99 and up they said it can be done but once they are on it must be reprogrammed at the Ford dealership. Has anyone put on high flows or low restrict? What was the outcome?

The high flow cats shouldn't cause the computer any problems. The rear o2 sensors just measure to see if they are working or not. Not how much they flow. I can't see the lower backpressure causing any PCM problems other than moking a little more upper end HP and maybe losing a small amount of low end torque. The MAF will adjust for the added airflow without having to calibrate anything.
The muffler shop should sell new converters, not used ones. They run about $125 each installed around here. Yes it is illegal to sell and install used cats.
