Question Brake Master Cylinder

Need a little advise, I have brake fade on my '93 Explorer and am pretty sure it's the master cylinder, it's only got 262,000 miles on it! How difficult is it to change out and are there any secrets or hints I need to be aware of?

TIA

John

Have you ever replaced the brake fluid? Could have moisture in it after all those miles, and should be done with a master cylinder swap anyway. How about brake hoses - are they mushy? Are the calipers/wheel cylinders (don't know if '93s have 4-wheel discs) sticking?

Thanks for the reply Steve......this is after stopping the pedal keeps going down till you hit the floor, let up on the pedal and then re-apply and it goes to the floor slowly but none the less all the way down. The fluid has been changed once don't remember when, calipers are not sticking or leaking that I can tell. As I type this I had forgotten about the resevoir cap, I wonder if the seal in it is shot and it's letting air in the system. What about vacuum leak? I have got to find my service manual, I can't for the life of me remember what I did with it. 36 yrs old and already getting senior moments?

Thanks

John -

My reply was based on fading, but it sounds like you definitely might have a master cylinder problem (check valve?). Have you tried pumping the pedal hard while someone checks all 4 corners for leaks.......just a thought? I've got 26 years on you, so I'm familiar with senior moments!!! Good luck on solving your problem.
