Need Help Fast

Guys, need your help on this one. My mother in law has a 1991 Ranger with the 3.0 v6 that is making what sounds to be lifter noise. I pulled the codes and got no codes. There was also no signs of oil leakage. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

When is the last time he changed the oil? Also, what kind of oil filter? I have not heard good things about FRAM. Maybe change the filter to a Motorcraft.

Is the noise just at startup, then goes away, or goes away after warm up, or does it have the noise constantly???

Did this come about slowly over time or suddenly, after some event????

It seems to do it after it warms up a little. It also smells like something is burning, but the temp doesnt go up very high. I believe it came about gradually over time. Also, it has died a couple of times.

If it has come about slowly over time, makes me wonder about engine dposits.

Has she had the oil & filter changed on a regular basis, with quality products??

Have you pulled a valve cover to see what it looks like in there lubricant & deposit wise??? Does it look dry & carboned, varnished, or sludged up???

I think that I am going to do a complete tune up for her and see if that helps.
