How much oil for the 5.4?

I did my did my 1st oil change on 04 5.4 F-150 yesterday. The manual calls for 7 quarts of oil with a filter change but when I pulled the dip stick it's over the fill mark. I searched through the archives here and someone mentioned using 6.5 quarts. On my 2002 F-150 I used 6 quarts and it was always between Min----Max on the stick.

Thanks!

It is 7 quarts. Did you start the engine and shut it off and wait 5 min.before checking it. If not it would show overfull because the filter would be empty.

Yes. I'll check it again when I get out to the parking lot this afternoon. It's been sitting all day so maybe it's settled down now.

Thanks for the 7 quart confirmation!

I would recomend about 6.5. I put 7 in mine and the oil level meter reads above middle.

I recheck my oil level again after it had been sitting a while. The confusing thing is my oil stick. Unlike the 02 F-150 that I had or my wife's 01 Expedition, my oil stick looks something like this....
oXXXXX| o
My oil level was right at the upper hole in the stick.

On the Expedition and in the 04 F-150 owners manual it looks something like this....
MIN oXXXXXXXo MAX

On the 01 Expedition and the 02 F-150 my oil level was always at the center of the XXXXXXX on the stick. On the 04 F-150 I was looking for the same thing only the X marks stop 1/4" before the upper hole in the stick and now the oil level is at the upper hole on the stick which I assume is the MAX.

Now the question is do you go with the recommended oil capacity of 7 quarts or do you use 6.5 so it's in the middle?

At this point I guess it really doesn't matter since it doesn't appear to be over the assumed MAX level on the stick.

Thanks!
