Well, I dont have the truck yet. going to get it Wednesday in dallas. I do know it does not have the turbo. it is a 2x4 but dont know the differential ratio. I would assume it is the o/e diff.
thanks

20,000 GCVW is manufacturers recomended gross weight.
So if you take 20,000 and minus off the weight of the truck and it's load including occupants, the remainder is your towing capacity.

For a 4x4 the weight will be close to 7500 for the truck, so you can estimate 12,500 towing capacity.

Without the turbo you can pull it, you are not going to set any speed records.

Dave,
Ok, so a 1994 f 250 4x4 weighs 3.75 tons. (7500 lbs)
if a ton is 2000 lbs then it must be so.
my 3/4 ton will weigh 3.75 tons?
I dont think I want it then.
I thank you very much for your help but Im somewhat confused now.
Please provide more info.
Thanks again,
Wesley

I have an 86 F250 4x4, I have a snow plow subframe on it as well as a 9' dump bed and a heavy duty class 5 hitch reciever. It holds 66 gallons of fuel. The truck weighs 7860 without me in it and I weigh 215 pounds. So my lite weight (unloaded) when I am in the truck full of fuel is 8075 pounds.

I have it licensed for 20,000 GCVW which means I can cross the scales legally with 11,925 pounds of trailer behind it.

A normal F250 diesel will have a gross vehicle weight of 8600 pounds.
Without all the extra stuff I have on mine the truck should weigh somewhere close to 7100 pounds.
8600 - 7100 = 1500 or 3/4 ton load capacity
This is the manufacturers recommended capacity for a stock truck.
My truck is about as stock as a Winston Cup ....Nextel Cup stock car.
I haul over 9000 pounds of rock on it, regularly.
I have had a GCVW of over 24,000 before, 3000 on the truck and a 13,000 pound trailer behind it.
It has done this job for 18 years, and I think it has another 10 or 15 in it yet.
263,942 miles on it now, but it earns its keep and mine every day

You ask what will it tow?
I had about three tons of rock on it one day and was driving up the interstate. A semi blew his clutch and was stopped in the middle of the road, could not move.
So I stopped and hooked a chain up to him.
Threw it down in low range 4x4 and pulled his truck off the road.
He got out shaking his head and said I would never have believed this if I was not here to see it.
His gross weight was 76,000 pounds and mine was around 14,000 with what I had on mine.

Dave,
You have one heckuva truck there and lots of info. Keep driving it. I like to hear people using things till the die. Most people trade up every two years for the latest gadget. (my wife wanted me to get a new 250 turbo diesel)
We own the Shady Dell Vintage Trailer Park in Bisbee, AZ. www.theshadydell.com
We recycle old stuff all the time. the truck will be used to travel and pick up vintage 50s trailers. But I have one that is 35 ft and i dont know what it weighs but I guess this new truck will do the trick.
Come see us sometime. we will put you up for a nite.

You are quite a haul from WV.
I just installed a reman 7.3 turbo in mine, so I think it has many more years to go.

New trucks are supposed to be tougher, but I am not a believer of all that they say about al that stuff. If you have something that does everything you want it to, why get something else.

Besides I would not want to do with a new truck what I do every day with this one.

Your trailer park looks cool as does the town.
I like stuff like that, I used to live in Denver, Colorado and had friends I stayed with in Blackhawk/Central City. All the gold and silver mines there were full of neat stuff.

Use your head about what and how you pull things, these are very capable trucks.
Enjoy life, I sure do.
Later, Dave

One more thing, Dave, If you have a moment: could I get a brief synopsis on the process of the reman. turbo. purchase, price, and install? for example, did it drop right in, did you do it?
I was a mortician in my former life so I dont know didly about trucks but I am enjoying life now.
Thanks so much for your time,
Wesley

My 86 had a 6.9 natural aspriated motor in it from the factory.
Oil consumption was getting out of control at about 250,000 miles.
Rebuild it here was the first option I looked at.
3 weeks downtime and about 5000/6000 estimate without looking internal on engine.
I found a 7.3 turbo upgrade reman complete drop in online for 6595 plus exchange with a two year unlimited mileage warranty.
I had two good mechanic friends with a shop help me install the motor, they wanted no part of the electrical changes that had to be made, but it was easy. I am an electrician and a fairly good mechanic myself.
We swapped the motors in about 12 hours. Everything bolted right up. The only electrical changes were from the old style glow plug system to the new style.
Since they are my friends the swap was real cheap, should have cost about 800 by the book price.
Everything was great, ran fantastic.
At 2659 miles it blew a head gasket.
Called the reman plant, they wanted to know what was the total damage, had to tear it down and see. The block cracked, blew the head gasket. They shipped me a new motor, paid for the teardown and inspection, paid for the swap (minus state sales tax) and paid for shipping both engines.
I have close to 9000 miles on the second engine, and love it.

End synopsis.
The local shop warranty would not have covered the cracked block.
I would not have gotten the turbo upgrade for that cheap.
The reman came with a run in dyno report on the engine.
The engine had fuel in the filter.
It was full of oil, filter installed and full of oil.
It had already been run, so it fired right away when I cranked it.
I swapped the brackets, alternator, power steering pump, vacuum pump, AC pump, fan, temp sensors (3), oil pressure sensor and the starter.
It came with a complete 3" Walker exhaust for my year truck.

The warranty was worth the difference in price.
I got a turbo for next to nothing.

This is the route I would recommend to anyone wanting to re power their rig.

Dave,
Ok, just one question this time: what company did you get this engine from?
