Big flathead motor ID ??? F-8 or what?

Hope someone can help me with the ID on this motor. The vehicle plate says it came out of an F-8 so I would think it's a 337 but it appears to have 28 head bolts. The engine number on the plate is <98EQH 37731> and the model number is <9E8QH>. If you guys have info on this please send me a reply. ...... Would also like to find an automatic that'll bolt up to this. Thanks ...... Bruce in Iowa

Thanks for the reply. Can you give me a break down on how those numbers relate?

This from the 1949-50-51 F-Series Truck Shop Manual: The "E" engine is the 337 V8. 145 HP. When looking at the wheel part numbers for the F-7 and F-8, 7EQ-1015 is 20x6.5 and 7EQH-1015 is 20x7.0. The EQ is standard of an F-7 and the EQH is standard on F-8. Same pattern for brake parts, and others. Therefore I'd gather this was from an F-8. Bolt tightening sequence confirms 27 bolts per head. I can't find it listed, but from the pattern I'd guess Ford called these "EQH" trucks just like my F-1 is a TH. Lots of other specs in this book for the E-engine, including a chapter on rebuilding. You may be able to find one on Ebay (where I got mine) or at a swap meet. Let me know if there's a spec you need and I can see if it is in the book. I also have a big engine, an "M" 254 I6 which only came in an F-6.
Good luck.
Johann
