Hi all. Just bought a 1988 Bronco II with a 2.9 at a DWI auction for $300. It started right up and runs vrey smooth. However, there's a pretty good oil leak (or leaks) somewhere. It looks like oil is dripping from close to the rear seal or oil pan when parked, and there's oil all around the oil filter, exhaust manifold, etc. When running, I can smell the oil burning from the engine compartment (the engine itself is not burning oil, thankfully), and when I stop after driving there's blue smoke coming up from uner the hood. Where should I start trying to investigate? Thanks.

The 2.9 is known to leak around the valve cover gasket.Sound like your are doing a good job of leaking.It could be the rear intake gasket to .The rear mains leak but I have never seen one leak much.For what you paid for a driving BII you can fix all the leaks with you saved.

 

Another possibilty is the distributor shaft seal.

 

Cursed 2.9 valve cover gaskets!! I have an 87 with the same prob. I haven't had the time to change those out but its coming real soon. Need to clean off the nice dirty oil coat the block is wearing. LOL.
