96 powerstroke from E4OD to 6 speed manual

I want to drop a 6 speed man. into my 96 F350 Has anyone done it? Will I have to mess with the computer at all? I would consider a 5 speed but it still poses the same questions.

Computer should be OK.I installed Bauman computer to control my e4,so my tranny is not connected to trucks PCM anymore.Had to put some resistors on the wire that went to the trans. range switch to "tell" the PCM the tranny was in N to start and D when running so that cruise control would work. The res. are on a relay to toggle on start and run off of ignition switch.Man, that 1st post is old!

Yeah! I've Got an E4OD and want a manual tranny so bad my teeth hurt. It is a 4x4 though. I have a neighbor with a '96, F250, 5.8L, 5 speed manual, 4x4 and wants to trade. Said he would even foot the bill for the incidentals. But someone told me the computer wouldn't work for him. Though I would be OK. Is this true?

The only thing I could think of that would be better, for me, would be a 6-speed. But there's always that money thing...

6 six woilf be a lot nicer but the 5 is a good trany too. I'm in the same boat you are I can't wait to ge the E4OD out of my truck and put in a manual.. fromwhat I've picked up the zf5 is by far the easier swap.. the zf6 takes some moving of crossmembers and you willl need a new transfer case to go with it. because of the spline..

Now if you get the zf5 out of the gassser afew things you want to think about.
What is yourer trucks axil gearing?? the gas tranys are gear much lower in 1st 2nd and 3rd. and the same in 4th and 5th.. so if you have a 4.10 you will basicly end up with a 4sp with a compound low.. that you will seldom use. but if you have a 3.55.. it seems like a realy good set up... youe 1sh-3rd wil be geared like a disely trany with a 4.10 and 4th aand 5th will run out welll onthe high way. Are the 351 and the460 the same bell houseing?? good luck J

gotta get the pedal boxes swapped for the clutch pedal. there are companies that do manual to auto swaps they might be able to work a deal since your going the other way. its definately doable just the cost of the tranny.

From the people Ive talked to the best blas to get the master ans slave cylinders is new fron an auto parts store that way you can get the lines too. .. I found some good sourse for zf5's too if you go to junkyard dog ,com you will get tons of emails of used and re builds if thatdose not work I can pm you some good links. If I were you I would get a new fly wheel and south bend or luk clutch no reason to start with worn out parts. that will be the first to go. and then you can get a single mass fly wheel.. not the cheepest but I think it is what I wil do... Your truck wlll have a hole i n the fire wall for the master cylinder. it is just coverd by patch same with the shifter hole .. als keep me informed about any thing that you find out..I'm still gathering infomy self J

Could you post exactly how you did this. I swapped a 6-speed in and took out an e4od in my 90. long story. Anyway I need to know how to trick the comp for an auxillary idle controller.
Thanks Craig

Hey Guys,
I have done a similar swap. I took out an e4od in my 90 F-350. I put in a ZF 6-speed. I also took out the IDI and put in a Powerstroke.
Info for you. I think the T-case input for the manual and the auto are different, so even if you go with the 5speed Ithink you will have to change t-cases. I bought all of mine together from a salvage yard. ZF-6, T-case, Drive Shafts, Pedal and Clutch linkage all together from the same truck. (I got the motor from a 99 E-350 ambulance)
I also got the cross member. I had to do a lot of fabricating on the cross member (it was from a 01 f-350 and the frames are slightly different.)
Hope that helps,
Craig
