The Emissions light?
Hey, Tim,
I'll ask a true authority to chime in here to confirm but, until then, my knowledge of the
80-86 EMISSIONS light is, that thing is on a timer (Ford calls it an Implied Mileage
Sensor) to come on approximately every 50,000 miles, its sole purpose is to remind you
to service the vehicle.
The sensor can be reset for another 50,000 miles by using a (I think) paper clip to to
push a microswitch in the sensor but I'm not sure of this thing's location, we'll have to
wait for somebody who knows for certain. IMHO a device like this can't be real hard to
get to, shouldn't require any major disassembly of anything to access it.
Yes, it's a way for Ford to make money by having people bring it in to the dealer but,
before you criticize them, know that this is still done.... I had to look up how to do this on
a friend's mid-90s Acura Integra, it's got a dash light that comes on periodically to remind
the owner it's time for maintenance. The box & button is easily accessible by reaching
under the dash near your right knee, but of course the Owner's Manual doesn't mention
that little fact........
A 1986 model, I'd imagine that has a TFI/EECIV igntion system which I believe is still
OBD1, instructions for checking codes yourself are at:
Ford Fuel Injection
This looks to be the same info available in the link posted by FL1A above, choose
your poison.
Alternatively, you can probably borrow a code reader to use in the parking lot of a
Checker (O'Reilly) store, hopefully the snot-nosed teenager employees can figure out
how to use it, your truck doesn't have any bar codes or anything like that.....

The first year of the check engine light on the F-series, and full sized bronco is 1988. This light is hooked to the EEC for diagnostics.
The emissions light, 1984-1987 F-series and Bronco, is as CTBUTIS described.
Not sure when the Bronco-II switched over as these were based on the Compact Ranger pickup, but I would assume around the same time frame, +/- a year.
My books only cover the F-series and Full sized Bronco, so can't tell you an exact location. On the F-series it's a square box, located underneath the dash, next to or around the fuse panel area.

Thanks, 81!
I looked at some Bronco IIs in the junkyard today but couldn't find the thing... I found a
small box down behind the the passenger side kick panel near the computer but it didn't
have a hole in it, must be something else.
On some mid-80s cars, I see a lot of those small electrical boxes about the size of a flash
cube (remember those?) near the center of the the firewall under the dash, near some
heater/AC vents.
Tim - 81 tells us the hole will have a small piece of tape over it if it's never been reset
before.
I know I've seen it in one of my Ford books (I think there's also a drawing depicting
resetting the thing) but I can't seem to find it when I'm looking for it.

the box under the carpet on the pass side floorboard is the inertia switch, (crash switch) fuel shut off. The emmision reset switch on mine is under dash, pass side. open the glovebox, push in sides so it falls all the way down, straight up underneath, if key buzzer works, right next to it. Think i used a little screwdriver, or allen wrench or something

yep and yep, crash switch has a button on top of it, and to run the codes, to get all of em and erase em and stuff takes awhile, lot of steps followed in order. Got my reader at autozone for 20 bucks plug it in count beeps, actually i make slashes, and leave spaces, till i have 2 same groupings, then count em and see what the codes are by the charts. never went past that, one of these days when i'm old and patient i'll read into it and go through all the steps
