over riding the glow plug relay
Unless you've got an early 6.9L engine that has the controller that screws into the cylinder head water passage I can't imagine why you'd want to. The later 7.3L IDI engines used a solid state module that senses engine temp to vary the on time of the glow plugs and the Power Stroke cycles them from the ECM based on engine temp. If the system has something wrong with it, get it fixed.

I had it done on mine 1989 f-250 with a turbo, I would do it again. My controller burnt out all my glow plugs , so I decided not to have that happen again. You can control the system, not the controller. I had my truck in the teens in the winter without plugging it in and it started right up without any problems . When most people say not to do it, don't listen to them . You wished you've done it sooner.

I put in a push button about three weeks ago. I have only used the gps maybe 5 times since. I plug in at night with a timer to come on about 4 hours before I get up. Yesterday it was 11 degrees. It started fine with no gps, and worked all day without them. It never cranks more than 5 seconds. It was easy to do. Mine is a 90, 7.3. All you need is a push button switch, some wire and connectors. What year truck do you have?

If you have a solid state controller, go to page 5 of this forum, about 2/3 down to a thread called "Doing repair and need help". This is how I found out how to do it. If you have an older truck, I think www.members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/ will have the right info. Check your wire colors and read the thread. That will tell you which to use. I always disconnect the batteries before doing electric work. I used an aftermarket push button for a starter. All I had to do was remove one wire form the relay (the white wire) and run a new wire from the terminal to the button and then to a ground. Tape up the old wire. Before I asked, I had no idea how easy it was. Good luck with it.
