C-4 Question?

I have obtained a C-4, recently rebuilt, to go in my '72 Bronco. This automatiic is out of a '74 Bronco. My question is, do I need the adapter on the tailhousing of the C-4, or will my adapter for the 3-speed toploader work?
The deal was too good to pass up, seven bills for it all, but he'll give me a bill back if I do not need/want the adapter.

Thanks in advance.

You do need the original C4 adaptor. I wouln't fall for the $100 dollars back. It is worth atleast $250. I hope the tranny Is in very good shape/low miles. Other wise if it needs rebuilt than your paying about $350 for a C4 core tranny. The adapter is no longer avalible new from Ford but is avaliable new from Advance Adapters for around $400.

Thanks for the info, Bronc. The 4X4 business next door installed an AOD for this fellow, and the shop owner is quite informed on the history of the whole truck, having driven it before the swap. I still may have my transmission guru check it out before my son-in-law and I do the changeover.

The C-4 is worth $700 dollars with adapter.
$400 for adapter
$300 for good rebult C-4
by the way any small block C-4 would work.
You have to ad in the cost of some kind of a shifter.
I personally would go with a NP435. cheaper and easier. Way lower gears.

C-4s only from a Bronco will fit the stock adapter.Rest of the C-4s will only work if you run only 2wheel drive.NP435 is a manual transmission.Change out bellhousing add a clutch and then add a clutch pedal and linkage....Keep the adapter they are very rare

Blue and Bronc,

My understanding is that the the C-4's for the EB's have a special, shorter output shaft. As far as the NP-435, I want my wife and daughter to be able to drive the Bronco, so the 'matic is the better choice. The old 3-speed needs rebuilding anyhow, so the C-4 makes more sense.

Thanks for correcting me. What I ment was that the transmission doesn't have to come out of a EB. The transmission really isn't special it's just a short shaft model.

when i took my 3 speed out and put the c4 in, i was told i had to use the transfercase for the c4. isn't there some differences in the transfercase also??? i just exchanged the whole unit on mine after rebuilding it, so i never tried to put the 3 speed manual transfercase behind the c4. i did look in a parts book and it showed differences between the two. anybody know for sure before he gets into it?

The transfer case itself is the same between the manual and the auto. What you may have seen was the '73 was the introduction of both the auto and the J shift transfer case. The adaptor for the auto has a locating "insert" that fits into the transfer case input hole. It holds the adaptor bearing, input shaft and gear.

The Bronco C4 output shaft is unique from a standard 2wd shaft. Also, the Bronco transmission case is unique as the dipstick tube is in the pan. The Bronco was the only C4 equipped 4wd made.

As far as an automatic for ease of driving for your wife and daughter...
My wife can grab gears with my 435 with the best of them. And when my daughter is ready, she'll be learning in my Bronco.

My point is that you can put a short shaft C4 in a EB with an adapter that is available through any of the specialty shops. Trying to source an original is not nesisary.

The info RCawler has is interesting. I havn't messes with an auto EB as none around here.
