aight. im new to diesels. how many quarts of oil? what type? and how many thousand miles should i change it. thankz

 

My 90' 7.3 holds two and a half gallons so i usually buy 3 one gallon jugs of rotella and just check as i add it,And as far as milage goes if you do alot of pulling or working the motor i would change it at 3,000 or if you not working too hard you can go 5,000 miles but check it when you every other or even every fill up is what i do.hope this helps you out.

 

I use my truck mainly as a highway truck, "HONEY WAGON" and every once in a while I pull a boat. Everyone around here says change every 6000-10000 miles, do yall think it will hurt to go that long or what?

I have a 97 f250 PSD and it takes 14 quarts with a filter change. I personally believe in and use BP Vanellus C-Extra 15-40. I buy it in gallons for about $22.00 per case(4 gals) at my local BP bulk plant. If you run your diesel hard, drive in dusty areas, or tow you should change it every 3000 miles. If not every 5000.

I have changed oil every 6000 miles in my 93 since new and have about
163000 miles on the engine with no troubles at all...
I live in Canada and use a 15 40 weight in the summer and a 10 30 in the winter look in the owners manual or on the oil cap for the proper grade of oil.. it takes about 10 quarts with a filter change... good luck I know you will enjoy the truck

 

Is it true that it is normal for the Powerstroke diesel to burn 2 qts of oil between 5,000 mile oil changes?

I am looking at buying a 1996 F350 that was used as a work truck. The owner says the 2 qt burn is normal.

 

What's "normal" oil usage seems to be an individual thing. I've seen and heard lots of folks claim that their PSD will be a quart or so down between changes. Mine is a 97 and (knocking on wood as I type, which is not easy!!) doesn't use any...at least not any measurable amount. If a good thorough look-over and crawl-under doesn't reveal any oil leaks, and if you're not smoking A LOT (a diesel's gonna smoke sometimes, particularly at start-up) then a quart between oil changes wouldn't worry me. 2 quarts probably wouldn't overly concern me either. I'd say that over all, a bit of usage between changes is probably "normal".

 

I change the oil on my truck every 4000 miles, and I find that I'm about 1 quart low at about 2600, so I add one, and at 4000 I'm 1/2 quart low again, so I guess I'm burning 1 1/2 qts in 4000 miles. I don't leak or smoke excessively, and the truck runs great, so I'm not concerned, and I'm not even thinking about investigating any further.
On a similar note, I've been told that a small block Chevy might burn as much as 1 qt every 600-1000 miles, and that's within the range of acceptability!! Acceptable to some maybe.

I changed oil, 15 qts, and filter at 2,000 5,000, 10,000 & 15,000. Only 17,000 miles on it now. It uses 1 qt between changes, except for the first change. When I start to tow my travel trailer all the time I will chage oil sooner depending on how hard I work the engine....Richard


My ride is a 2000 F350 Super Duty, Lariat, PSD, 4X4, long bed, 4.1 rear, automatic, SRW, with added stainless steel 4" exhaust, turbo to 5" tip, with a "see thru" muffler and EGT, Trans temperature with turbo psi gauge. I tow a 12,000 pound 28.6 ft travel trailer

 

Thanks for the feedback, I am not worried now. By the way, this guy is a contractor/friend of mine and I didn't really have any reason not to believe him, esp because he has 3 diesel Ford pick ups and they all burn oil between changes. He even told me to stay away from any diesel that doesn't burn a little oil because that could indicate a problem. I will probably drive the truck on Monday. It is a 1996 F350 w/ 117,000 miles on and everything appears solid and the original box was just put back on, so it looks great. Biggest concern now is how to address ride quality as he had the stock F350 suspension upgraded to an even heavier rating.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Sep-02 AT 06:38 AM (EST)]Well I just did my first oil change on my latest acquisition (91 F250 DSl 7.3L engine) and I did notice the guy at the place that did all fluid changes for me (first diesel for me I wanted to make sure things gets checked properly) when he changed the oil filter, he filled it to ensure no air was in the filter before replacing it back unto the engine, after asking why he was doing that, he answered that sometimes the vacuum of the diesel can crush (implode) an oil filter.

He also reccommend the 15w40 rottela oil to be changed every 5K miles.

something to think about.

91 ford F250 Super Cab, 300K miles on it, hauls 2 horse trailer + horses without any issues. Gotta love them bad *** diesels.

 

 

hey mike83, I just bought a 1995 7.3 PSD, I love it so far. How often do you need to change your glow plugs/glowplug relays? I drive mine maybe a few days a week (not often) and it has 211k miles. With this many miles, do I have to start worrying about major repairs or not? I know the 7.3 PSD is a greqat engine so I don't think I have to worry, but I would still like your opinion. Also, (not including fuel) I don't mean to get nosy, but what are your average monthly running costs (as far as regular maintenanace goes)? Thanks, Nick.

 

I heard it's just better to put oil in the filter because it's so big and when you first start the engine after the change, the filter has to fill up before you start getting oil pressure to the engine.
