new gm/ford transmission

Was just reading the Chicago Sun-Times, and they show a picture of a new 6-speed transmission that Ford/GM built together for their new cars. Anybody have any info on this, and why they are now working together like that? I like it actually. 2 good companies working like that could definitely make good transmissions even better!

The announcement this week is kind of misleading... the project has actually been going for 2 years plus. The announcement this week covered production - the transmission has already been designed.

I agree, this is a positive step forward. GM usually (but not always) builds great transmissions. Frod has gotten a lot better itself over the past couple of years too.

Now the questions is when will (or if) the Escape receive this tranny? The existing 4-speed is outdated. And, if not the new 6-speed auto, where is the 5-speed auto that Mazda already uses behind the 3.0 DOHC engine?
