Check engine light on...how do I run codes to diagnose problem?

4.6L motor 98 F150 4x4

Ok, my OD light stopped flashing after I disconnected the battery recently , but this morning my check engine light came on. After reading a few posts, I see that many of you are "running codes" to diagnose the problem. I have not been able to locate a post that tells how to run the codes. Sooooo....how do you run the codes? Thanks!

You must have a scanner. Or you can go to AutoZone and they will scan it for free!!

Thanks! The light went off on its own yesterday, so I guess I don't need to worry about that for now, but at least I'll know how to get the codes in case I have any future problems with it.
