Daytime Running Lights (DRL)

Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
I just bought a 04 Explorer last week (my 93 Explorer burned up the other day (power seat shorted out and torched the inside)) and I'm in the process of adding accessories. Aside from the remote start, active security system, and XM radio, I wanted to add daytime running lights because of the insurance discount and to keep folks from running into my hard to see light green Explorer. Dealer wants $214 to install what appears to be a simple $60 DRL module. Anyone have any experience on adding this module to a 2004 Explorer? I read one post where the dealer had to add a new light sensor to the dashboard of a 2002 F150 to enable the DRLs. I would think that the newer models would use the existing light sensor.

Well, I am not one hundred per cent sure, but maybe your car already equipped with the DRL module. At least, all the Explorers here in Russia I've seen are equipped with it. So just try to put a fuse into the power distribution box under the hood to its position, and see what happens. At least, this worth a try.

These are a few websites that sells the module... there is however a direct plug in for your explorer...
A dummy plug is plugged in to the DRL module plug to bypass the feature... get an Explorer service manual, locate the terminal... & u'll find the dummy plug plugged into it. when you do find it, you can buy the module from the dealer.... unplug the dummy plug on your truck, & plug in the module directly... no wiring necessarry.... Unlike the aftermarket DRL module in the links I gave you.
for 96-99 Explorers(old body style) the module is located in the front driver fender... don't know if they have moved the location for 2000 & up. (fuse for the module is hooked together with the fog lights(on fog light equipped trucks)

Ford tends to use one DRL system for most of their fleet.... so its either one of the system here:

I have the DRL Module - Ford Part Number F65Z-15A272-AA on my '97 explorer.
As I said earlier... the key is location of it in your truck...
Hope this help.

Better check to be sure you dont have to add a relay as well. On the last Explorer I attempted to add this feature there was a separate relay box under the hood just for DRL.... there was no wiring in the relay box for the relay....
As for a light sensor, the DRL system does not use a sensor, it is on all the time the key is in the on position. Only Autolamps need a light sensor.
