Synthetic Oil for Powerstroke?

This post might be more appropriate for the Oil/Lubricant Forum, but I was afraid that it would get lost among all of the gasburner topics, and I wanted feedback from diesel owners.

I would like to switch to a synthetic oil in my '02 Powerstroke to extend my oil change intervals. What is your experience w/ synthetic oil, what brands are recommended, and what is your oil change interval w/ the synthetic?

Synthetic Oil for Powerstroke?

To get extended drain intervals even with synthetics most poeple are running bypass filters.

Synthetic Oil for Powerstroke?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-Oct-02 AT 09:59 AM (EST)](1)Delvac Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w40 (SILVER Jug not BLACK)
At truck stops it goes for about 35 bucks a gallon!!! I have not found it at Wal Mart or auto supply houses. You will find it at oil distributing companies/commercial lubricants, unknown price.

(2)Rotella T Shell Synthetic 5w40 (BLUE Jug not WHITE)
It goes for about 13 bucks a gallon at Wal Mart.

Synthetic Oil for Powerstroke?

I have a 99' F-350, PSD, at 11,000 miles I switched to Amsoil 15-40 Diesel Marine oil, without the bypass filter system, but using the Amsoil filter for the PSD,
I was told at 12,000 miles you replace the filter, then change the oil at 25,000 miles,,well I changed the filter at 12,000 miles, then at like 21,000 I decided to change the oil ( just in case,) I had it tested, with the company they use,,and it came back,,

" Results of test Indicate: No Corrective Action Required, Oil Is Suitable for Continued Use, Resample At next regular interval"

Now thats oil with 21,522 miles on it, ! I check it often, and it seems to use less now also ! ,,Works for me, I now have like 10,000 miles on this change, almost filter time soon, the PSD runs Great ,,Now I was a firm beliver in changing my oil every 3,000 miles which i did with my 95' F-350 PSD,,Then I traded it for this 99', which I did the same,up to 11,000 miles, but lets face it, at almost $ 50.00 bucks an oil change it was rather expensive and that was like every 8 tanks of fuel or ( 3,000) miles. seems to me it's like $ 90.00 for the Amsoil 15-40 and filter change.

I am not a DEALER, just my preference on how to maintain my PSD.

,,Great Site,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Later,,,,,,,Mark

Synthetic Oil for Powerstroke?

Here in France we commonly use synthetic, I use Castrol 5w/40 and have never had any problems, stretches the oil & filter change intervals and pressure is always good even with hard driving.

Synthetic Oil for Powerstroke?

Hi: I have a 2002 PSD with about 7,800 miles on it. I was wondering on how many miles I should have on my PSD engine before changing over to synthetics.

Thanks For All Reply's,
Bud:-)

I would reccomend Mobil Delvac1 5w40. I pay $20.42 per gallon at a Mobil Distributor. I have been using Delvac1 for over three years in a Cummins, and since the first oil change on My 2002 PSD, along with a Filter Solutions bypass filtration. I can give You more info by e-mail on the bypass system etc. I went with the synthetic at 4,500 miles in the PSD.

"Has any one using synthetic replaced any injectors. If so at what milage. Lets compare with guys using reg. oil. Mabye synthetic is extending injector life. Lets find out."

What an excellent question. To capture as many diesel forum browsers interest and participation to learn about that relationship, I think we should have a new thread subject line asking for feedback about this. Something like ~

Can synthetic oil extend PSD injector life?

Probably most PowerStroke owners are unaware of the fact that their motor oil is used as hydraulic fluid to power their injectors. Phrasing the question that way might capture their interest. The first post should explain that relationship. Those who have paid to replace PowerStroke injectors or have them rebuilt should be highly motivated readers because they are so much more expensive than older traditional injectors which use an external very high pressure pump to obtain full injection pressure.

Synthetic Oil for Powerstroke?

I just switched over to Amsoil 15w40 on my F-350 PSD to see if there is any difference over normal motor oil. I will post on any differences I experience.

Synthetic Oil for Powerstroke?

Conklin Para Synthetic oil is on the list of those approved for use in PowerStrokes. It's very expensive but if I recall is one of only two oils who's makers have figured out a way to blend in molly lube in a way that oil filters don't quickly pull it out of the oil system. On the Conklin web site is one PowerStroke mileage testimony claim that's higher than anything I've ever seen anywhere else. Just for the hell of it, I bought a 20 gallon drum of it, so with the next oil change, I'll be trying it. If it is conspicuously different acting, I'll post about it after I have enough testing time to compare it with the current Delvac 400 I'm running.
Color me skeptical but hopeful.
John
