need help on timing, please

on a 2.9 eng, when you say disconect the spout on the dist. are you refer, to the ele. connector. i disconected the ele connector and the truck would not start, i cannot find anything else on the disturber to disconnect. i put the timing light on it , it reads about 12 degrees without anything disconnected at idle, runs fair, not a lot of power, gas mileage horrable. any suggestions besides junk it.

the problem was the timing was 10 degree btdc with nothing unpluged, so i unpluged the spout and then set the timing to 10 btdc like the lable under the hood said to do, and then put the spout back in, and now it runs like scalded dog and the the mileage is much better. (someone set the timing wrong)
