Need a 48 Glove Box Door with VIN Plate

Does anyone happen to have a spare glove box door for a 48 F-1, F-2, or F-3 that they could part with? I need one with a 48 VIN plate. Mine did not come with a VIN plate and there is no number on the frame. Someday I want to register this thing...

New Hampshire is a no title state for vehicles over 10 years old, so it doesn't matter what the number is as long as it's a 48. I've been watching Ebay for about a year now and have seen several glove box doors for 49 and 50 , but can't seem to find one for a 48. Can anyone help?

Nope, struck out again. That one has a 49-up VIN on it according to the seller...

How much would one year matter? If you are the only one that knows it says a 49, you can always call it your 48. Here's a riddle. If the truck doesn't have a vin how do you actually know it's a 48 and not a 49?

Nathan,

The truck was sold to me by the previous owner as a 48 and having been a member of the National Street Rod Association for the past 30 years, I'd like to enter it into the Street Rod Nationals which allows only 1948 and earlier year vehicles of manufacture...so it needs to be a 48. I know the 48-50 all look alike, but I'm just trying to stay within the rules if I can. That's why I bought the truck to begin with. I passed on a couple of 49-50 trucks to get this 48. The owner assured me it was a 48 because he had a title at some point in the past, but without numbers I can't get a duplicate. Is a Canadian 48 about the same as a US made 48? Let me know what you have. Perhaps we can do some dealing

There is Blanchard Auto Salvage ( 603-654-9445 ) here in the southern part of the state where we get most all our parts. They have tons of old car and truck parts. I know they have a lot those years, but I don't know what the VIN numbers would be to look at. The place is about 5 miles from us. I could check them out on a Saturday morning when they're open, weather permitting.

Dan,

This is my understanding of the VIN number. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong...

A 48 US made VIN number would be as follows:

88RC 123456

The first 8 is the year of manufacture - 1948.
The 8R means V8 engine / 7H would be a six cylinder engine
The C means 1/2 ton pickup or F-1 / Y would be 3/4 ton pickup or F2 or F3 / T would be one ton or F-4.
The rest of the numbers are the sequence of production.

Since I'm changing the engine and making an F-1 out of an F-3, it doesn't matter to me whether the VIN is for an F1 or F2/F3 or whether the engine code is for six cylinder or V8.

I know nothing about the Canadian VIN numbers. The main thing is that the US number I need must begin with either 88RC, 88RY, 87HC, or 87HY. That would make it a 48 F1, F2, or F3 with a six or eight cylinder engine.

Later I thought you might want to enter the street rod. I probally get you a canadian vin from a wrecker for free (or steal the one from the abandoned F-135 up the road) A canadian vin for that year actually says 48 in it. Since you know so much about american vins you could buy those letter punches and make your own. Is the truck still striped to the frame? Up here they stamped the vin in twice on the frame. They stamped one in the middle near the end of the cab.

Nathan,

I don't even know what an F-135 is. Is that a Canadian version of an F-1? I double checked for numbers on the frame when I had it all apart last year installing the Volare. I think the numbers may have been ground off at some time in the past.

It's the equivilant of an F-5. 13 500 GVW = F-135. I think it is a 48 (48-50 grill and cab). When I looked at it I didn't know how to decode Canadian numbers and didn't know where they were located. When the snow is gone I still got to take a pic and send it to Jgibbs. He's never seen a stock truck painted vermillion and black fenders.

Nathan,

I couldn't pass mine off for an F-5 anyway. I don't think it will matter if it's an F-1, F-2, or F-3 though...or the Canadian equivalent.

You could say you shortened the frame 20" instead of 8" (134" - 114") and changed the hood spears.

Nathan,

Guess I could...isn't a one ton frame larger channel in addition to being longer? I could call it "Stubby".
