clank noise when starting cold -help!

I have 98 Ranger XL (2.5L 4cyl) with 120K miles. Truck drives like a tank - however when I start the truck 1st thing in the morning, once it turns over, a "clank-clank" noise heard. No problems starting or idling and if re-started various times during the day/night, it does not happen. It used to be one "clank" noise for months, now it's two. Any suggestions, ideas? Or am I worrying about nothing given the mileage?

Just 1 or 2 clank noises would suggest something external to the engine. You could spend hours by yourself trying to find the source. Get a couple-few buddies positioned around the truck to try to pinpoint the noise.
Good luck.
