Look at most the day, as you have to drop the trasnfer case and tranny. You may as well do the clutch while you have it appart, and the rear main seal. Thats my project this week end as well.

Yep, in the cards for me too

I will need more than a day though, Im a tender foot when it comes to trannys. You will need a tranny stand or something like that to lower the tranny. You may also want to consider replacing the slave cylinder. Im double clutching for now and that seems to help, along with some synthetic fluid I put in this Fall.

I have 178K on my tranny and clutch.

i strongly agree! if you r going to remove the tranny replace the clutch, pressure plate and ifs its bad the pilot bearing too. make sure to have the fly wheel resurfaced as well!!!! good luck.

i just finished up with replacing a 5 speed in my 89 xl i installed a new throw out bearing as well as a slavecylinder. the 2 came together as a kit around 80 bucks at autozone. i had to replace the clutch line as well because it did break. that was around 40 bucks from murrays. this line is a big pain to replace, so SAVE IT!!! if you can.

note- the slave cylinder plastic line comes off with a speacial tool you can pick up at the auto parts store. you can use a make shift tool but be carefull. there is a plactic ring that needs to be pushed in to remove the line. this is if you have the internal slave cylinder.

im going to do this this weekend or next.
i have tremendious chatter coming from under truck. the noise is under acceleration and goes away when i put in the clutch.
sounds like a throw out bearing or could it be a bad
transmission. to my knoledge it was rebuilt not even 2 yrs ago.
any thoughs.

I don't know what year BII you have, waywoos, but I once thought my BII was developing clutch chatter. Instead, turned out the CV joints (not talking about double cardon u-joints) on my stock driveshaft were dying. When those CV joints are going, it can feel for all the world like clutch chatter.
Not saying that something in the clutch may not be going bad. But, if you have an '86 and later BII still equipped with the stock driveshaft, I'd check (or chuck) that driveshaft before going to the bother of getting into the clutch.

Look real close at the drive shaft befor attacking the clutch. I had a similar problem with mine and had changed the clutch just the year befor. Found the rear CV style joint on my driveshaft was gone. I couldn't find the same style so went with a replacement single cardigan ($125.00 new in Iowa). NAPA sells a complete clutch kit for $125.00 and has all the parts you need and replace the pilot bushing two. You can pull the little spring clip(I did with bent needle noses) and then the hose pulls right off and no leaks.
