Rough Idle

Could anyone offer any information as to what could be causing the rough idle of my F250 SD pickup. I have a 2004 F250 SD with a 5.4 L engine. It has aprox 5000 miles on it now and it has a rough idle. I have had it back to the dealer at 700 miles and they checked it and said that there was no diagnostic codes showing up so there is no problem. They said that everything was working properly. I recently brought it back again at 4000 miles as the idle is getting worse. They now told me that the computer is still learning and wait till 10,000 miles. They refuse to acknowledge that they can even tell it is running rough. It can be felt sitting in the seat and also it is obvious on the RPM meter in the dash. I really would appreciate any information anyone could offer.

Whats the idle rpm?
Does it get worse when in gear?
Does it shake when you take off slowly and then smooth out..?
Under the hood does the engine shake?
Highway in OD is it ok?

Could be anything from egr to vac leak to bad plug I would make sure you document all your visits and what they say. Have a mechanic look at it to get his opinion...
My opinion is it should be smooth as glass. I think they are giving you a crock of *****...

The idle rpm varies with the rough idle it is usually between 650 and 750. When it is in gear and you are at a stop light or intersection it is really noticeable. Take off seems a little strange but don't know what to expect as this the first Ford I have owned. I thought that the chatter on take off was the limited slip rearend. Haven't looked under the hood at the motor yet. Left it up the dealers to figure it out. Everything seems ok on the highway. And yes they are giving me a crock of ***** and I know it. My cousin bought the same truck at the same time and his is as smooth as glass and even gets better gas mileage. The only difference from his truck to mine is his a super crew and no limited slip.

My V-10 did that once after I re-oiled the K&N air element and the mass air flow sensor got dirty. A Q-tip and a little rubbing alcohol fixed it.

Lead you to any ideas?

Don't know what the problem is but I'm experiencing the same thing on my 2004 6.0L F350 that is approaching 5000 miles. Haven't contacted the dealer yet, thought I would check here first.

I hope you have better luck with the dealers than I have had. If you figure it out please share it with me. Thank you.

Very interesting, I'm having somewhat of the same issue. When starting, it is idling at 1100 rpms. It will drop to 1000 after a few seconds but then work it's way back up to 1100. After putting it in drive, it will drop to between 800-900. THat's still too hih isn't it? ANd it shouldn't be going up and down while in Park either, right?

It's not rough by any means, no shakes or anything. Just bothersome as hell and I know it's killing my fuel mileage!!

Truck has 11,600 miles on it currently. I'm due for an oil change in a couple of weeks so will have them check it then. Until then, any advice, suggestions, etc is appreciated!!

Crownie your truck shouold not idle at those RPM's much after start, and when it does it should keep going down till it gets to about 750 Rpm's. There is a definite problem. Also gas mileage is almost non-existant in my truck. If I baby this truck I get around 10 miles per gallon. I am very disappointed in this Ford truck. I should have bought a Dodge. Dodges have there problems and I know what to expect going in to it as I have had many. At least when my Dodges failed they completly failed and was able to get it fixed so it could fail again. Good Luck!

I agree with 99 here. Don't do anything yourself right now but bug the dealership. If they don't cooperate go to another dealer. But, definitely document all this.

If you have to do something remove the ground cable from your battery with the headlights on. Let it set for about 30 minutes. Then, turn your headlights off and reconnect the battery. You will lose your settings on your radio and clock(s), but that is all I would do right now. Then get in your truck and go for a normal drive.

Be firm with the dealership.
