Post 5.4 smoking.........

Whenever I start my truck, it lets out a cloud of black smoke which disapperas and then white smoke starts comin out from the exhaust. What can this be????

I am also having trouble on startup. I dont know if they have anything to do with each other but they started at the same time. When I star my truck sometimes it starts with a bit of trouble and I have to give a little gas to make sure it gets goin. Other times it crqanks but doesnt start up. Then when I crank it again, it takes a couple seconds of cranking before it starts up.

My 2003 SD with the 5.4 smokes every startup when it's cold. It is a gray/black color. I assume it is a rich start mixture issue. My truck has done it since new and it has 9,000 miles now. I am waiting until next winter to take it back. I had a 99 V10 before this one and it did it too with 75,000 miles. Very embarassing.

The white smoke is probably condensation. The black smoke is rich condtion. When you take it back in, have them check it out. You should not get black smoke and hard starting.

Thanx. It appears to give me problems starting mostly when its warm. And I think it only smokes when it does not start properly. I have to keep an eye on it. I think my warranty is expired so I wont be taking it to the dealer. I'm gonna check the IAC and see if that is dirty.

Seems like cleaning the IAC did the trick. It was pretty dirty. Hasnt done it all day today (knock on wood). I hope it stays this way.

Okay, it is till doin it, but I am sure that it only smokes when it starts bad. Not a good experience with my first Ford I have to say.
