5.4 liter egr valve flow problem

i have a 97 ford expedition with a 5.4 liter with 108k miles. my check engine light has been coming on every once in a while and when i check it with my obd 2 it reads either insufficient or excessive egr valve flow. do i need to replace it or can i take it out and clean it to reuse. could the problemm be with any thing else. when the light comes on my engine seems to be very lightly chugging when cruising at a moderate speed. thanks for any help anyone has.

i had the same problem. mine was the sensor that reads the egr. but in my reseach for mine i found that i can be cleaned. i can't remember what to use but i got my information from the dealership. but the sensor is a common problem. when i had mine replaced at the dealer with 35k miles on my truck the service man told me the sensor for my truck has a 50k warranty because of the problems they have had. hope this will help.

Sometimes its the sensor, sometimes its the hoses or the ports the hoses hook to ,they become clogged with carbon build up.

Try cleaning the hose ports first.
It can also be the EGRV solenoid or the EGR itself

Just some more thoughts on the subject

pageparsley: The two parts that may the culprit & I would be willing to bet real money that it is one of these two parts if not both, the delta pressure feedback sensor [dpfe] sensor ford part
# is f63z9j459aa, and the sensor relay is ford part # f77z9j460ab
both of these parts work in sync to provide correct egr flow &
smooth vehicle operation, the dpfe sensor will not cause noticeable operation problems you should just get a check engine light, now on the the hand if the relay is the culprit you will probaly notice some vehicle surging at around 40mph up to 55mph this could be described as a backwards to forewards
motion of the vehicle. From experience if the relay is at fault it
would be wise to replace both sensor & relay[ I mean its like you
would not change your oil without changeing your oil filter] , if it is just the sensor you have a good chance that may be all you need replace. If you run into any problems tell us.

I too have had to replace the DPFE sensor in my '97 E350 5.4L. It was located on the drivers side of the engine, almost all the way to the back, on the intake maniford (just forward of the EGR valve itself.
