Crankshaft Position Sensor

Is there a method to check the crankshaft position sensor?. My 82 Bronco 351W just quit at about 60mph as if you would have shot it. It did not run rough or anything, just shut down. I had the ignition box tested and it is fine, the coil is getting power and has checked OK also. So now I am down to the cps or the EEC box. Oh yea no spark to the plugs either.

Thanks for any help....

Sounds a lot like your pickup coil, which is inside the distributor. The '82 doesn't have a crank sensor (none of the 351w engines did). Make sure that the distributor turns with the engine, and if it does, I'd replace the pickup coil.

It sounds like the Crankshaft Position Sensor. You can test it with a multi-meter. Test the pins on the gray and dark blue wires. The spec is 100-640 ohm's. If it tests 'open circuit', the CPS is bad and needs to be replaced.

When you replace the CPS, rotate the crankshaft so that the tip of one of the four lobes on the pulse ring lines up with the tip of the CPS. Gap the opening between the two at .075". Then tighten the clamp.

All 302/351w engines with EEC-III have a CPS and do not use a magnetic coil pickup in the distributor.

Thanks for the post-I know its been a while but how sure are you on the spec..I got my multimeter set to 2k and all I am getting is .337. The truck (1983 f250 351W) broke down (sputtered and stalled) now I have a crank no start (got spark and fuel). Want to make sure the spec is right before I shell out 50$ for a sensor I don't need. Many thanks..if anyone else knows feel free to answer.
Many thanks.

Ummm, yes they did. My 96 E150's 351W has one. His 82 could have if it had the electronic feedback carb.

Died truck

I drive a 1991 f150 with a 302. It did the same thing. On mine it was the distributer. Clime up and look in side the distributer. First remove the rotor so you can get a good look. If you see a lot of debree , I believe it was black, then its you're distributer.

It did exactly what you are describing
