Engine hesitates @ lower speeds

My warranty was to 60,000kms. Just after that, I had engine hesitations at lower speeds. I went to Ford, and they told me that my 99 Ford Ranger 3.0L came with higher lift cam, so hesitation is normal. What a crock of BS! Im now at 92,000kms, and the hesitations is still there. CEL has been on for over 30,000kms now. PO401 code. I put in new spark plugs and wire set, PCV valve, fuel filter, air filter, engine performance increase is noticeable, but the slight hesitation is still there. Is it my O2 sensor? EGR? Any advice would be great! Thanx!

I believe that you need a new cam sensor.

Double check that code. I can't remember if the cam is 401 or 410. The cam sensor though, sits on top of a syncronizer, which is like a distributor without a top. It is driven off the back of the cam and is to let the computer know which cylinder should be firing so that it can control the fuel.

If the code is not for the cam than it will be for the DPFE (EGR).

P 0401 is usually DPFE. Here's a link for 3.0 L Technical info & tips. Scroll down to section 2 and then click on "Look up 1995+ Ford OBD II Diagnostic trouble codes. It'll open up a seperate PDF document with all of the codes listed. Search this site and find some threads on DPFE. Part is not that expensive, doesn't take too long to fix, and you'll save a good deal of money if you do it yourself.
