Quieting down exhaust for crusing

I have a set of purple hornies. I love the sound that they make it is real nice and throaty. Altough they get rather anoying after the first 10 minutes. After a long ride it really beats on your ears.

I have seen in summit that they sell inserts that go into your header that will quiet down your exhaust but these inserts are the price of new mufflers. Does anybody have any ideas on how to quiet down these mufflers. Maybe welding up some kind of baffle?

If i cant modify these mufflers what would be a good muffler for a nice acceleration tone but quieter crusing. Anyone have any suggestions?

where is your exhaust exit at. if it is dumped or right behind the cab you should be bothered with the sound.

Jimbo81587,

I would agree with modru2004 in getting a flowmaster series 50. I just put this muffler on my 04 f250 5.4 with 3"duals. It sounds like a beefed up mustang. It will give you a great sound thats not over powering. Great for cruzzin!

Flowmasters still have that "droan" at highway speeds, I would
go with a Gibson cat back.

If possible, try to move you tailpipe exit location to the rear or move the mufflers farther back, away from the cab. If not you're going to have to swap out to quieter mufflers.

i have dual exhaust, the purple hornies bolt right onto the headers, they dump right before the rear tires. I may have to take it to a muffler shop to get them to continue dual tailpipes out to the rear. Would there be any way to make some sort of baffle for the pipes.

I had this same problem with my new exhaust. I went with a V-Force muffler, the cut away showed it was the same design as the flowmaster but the metal was much thicker and the muffler shop is getting more mileage with them. I really like the setup, it was the sound I always wanted, I have BBK headers, stock Y pipe with the rear cat removed. I had the muffler connected right behind the cab and a turn down pipe at the rear axle. It was perfect around town but on the road it was way to loud. I added a tail pipe all the way out the back behind the rear wheel and the thing is to quiet now. It still sounds awesome but I was amazed what the tail pipe did. I should have taken it out in front of the rear wheel but I didn't want the wheel to get exhaust blown all over it. It is all 3" from the Y-pipe back. I bet true duals exiting out in front of the rear tires would be perfect.

I have decided to get two 50 series muffles (found a set used for 25 bucks) and dump them right before the rear wheels like you talked about and if i still dont like it, i will put on tailpipes.

Last year i put a turbo muffler on a blazer and dumped it at the rear axle. It was very annoying and it had a droaning noise while crusing. I put the tailpipe back on and now it almost sound like stock exhaust from the inside.

I would have them go out the side in front of the rear wheel. I think the noise comes from them dumping into the ground.
