Talking Lowering my 62 Unibody

Whats up fellas,

Well, heres the deal. I'm currently in the middle of a 62 Unibody restoration and I'm getting to the fun stuff. Finally the sheetmetal is straight and my rustfree tailgate had been procured. Now it's time for powertrain and suspension. There is a 500 cube Cadillac on the stand in my garage awating new life in the 62, which will get a Volaire clip graft and a TH400. For the rear suspension, has anyone ever flipped their leaf spring perches? If I drilled out the hardware holding the perches to the frame and flipped them over, as far as I can measure, there shouldn't be any interference with normal leaf spring compression. Has anyone ever tried this before? Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

T.J.

There are mono-leaf options available from several companies that will lower the truck considerably without removing the spring perches.

I have friends who flipped the perches on 60's chebbies, it worked well. Why not do an axle flip, move to the inside of the leafs?

It will decrease the distance between the diff housing and the frame, thus limiting your spring travel. You'll have to c-section the frame above the axle housing to keep your present clearance.

lowering the rear

You can take the the stock rear end and put it on top of the springs. You will need to C notch the frame about 2 inches.
I used a 73 cougar 9 inch rear its about 1.5 inches narrower than the stock rear on each side and as you well know there is plenty of tire room in the rear of a "Uni" for big meats.
As you can see in the pic below it works well with a Volarie clip and 18x11.5 torque thrust IIs in the rear and 18x9 in the front.
