Help - Engine won't turn over. Reset oil pressure safety switch?

I have a 99 F-250 Superduty, and I was changing my oil and forgot to put the new oil in. So I started the engine dry and after 30 seconds the engine cut out, like it was starved for fuel. Now the engine won't turn over.

Is there an oil pressure safety switch, and if so, how do I reset it so that I can get the engine to turn over?

I unplugged the battery thinking it might reset any computer that might control it, but obviously that didn't work. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Dave, you probably didn't hurt anything. The engine would crank on the aprox 2 quarts of oil that was in the HPOP. Then when it went dry the injectors would shut down, stopping the engine. Putting oil in the engine won't fill the HPOP. You will have to pull the plug on the top of the HPOP housing and fill it with oil, then the injectors will work again. Do you mean the engine wont fire off or it won't turn over. If it won't turn over check your batteries, fuses, fuel pump shut off switch, and starter relay. It should turn over but not start without oil in the HPOP.

Sorry, I misspoke - the engine does turn over but won't start. Also, I'm acronym-deficient - What is the HPOP and where can I find it?

Dave, HPOP = High Pressure Oil Pump. PSD's have two oil pump systems. The HPOP provides high pressure oil to the injectors to operate them. The low pressure system provides oil to the engine and turbo for lubrication and cooling. The rectangular shaped aluminum looking box just in front (radiator side) of your engine fuel filter is the HPOP housing. On the top of that housing is a plug. Clean off the housing top, remove the plug, if the housing is not full of oil fill it with clean new oil. Might run a little rough until all the air works out of the lines and head. Good luck, let us know how it works out.
