upgrade 5.4L

i wanted the V10 or even the diesel, but decided 5.4L b/c it was more not as hard on the wallet at the other 2 choices. i am happy with it, but i want some added power that i would feel without going crazy. i hear pros and cons of almost every air filter kit and etc. what is my most economical way to go? by the time i get done spending money on the 5.4 i prob could have just baught the V10 and been settled for power. i know its a broad question/answer, but all opionions are welcomed.

A good catback exhaust system is a good place to start. A good programmer/chip is also a good investment.
I have had no problems with any of the K&N filters that I have used. I would not get a air kit that uses an open element and draws in underhood heated air. Only use one that either goes thru the fender (like stock) or is somehow routed out of the engine compartment.
