where do frames rust out? 78 F-150 2wd

Hi:
I have a rusty 1978 F-150 2wd Ranger XLT 351M C-6 PS/PB no air . It looks like I might be putting in a rebuilt engine, and maybe a rebuilt C-6 at the same time. Most of the front end is almost new. I'm thinking I'll wire brush frame and paint with Zero-Rust (It's too much hassle to take frame off). Anyway, is there anywhere I can have/need a reinforcement plate welded to PREVENT future frame collapse. I'd hate to put all this work in and then have the frame snap! (even in 3 years). Suggestions? I'm not into classic restoration as I have other vehicles requiring my $$ and time. I'm in rust belt Indiana and this vehicle has never been rustproofed - of course. But a reliable part time vehicle for 5-10 more years with occasional tow use would be very nice. Thanks.

Best thing I would do is wire brush off all the scale and use that undercoating that bonds with the rust. Great stuff and will last for years. You're preaching to the choir about rust, try to live on the coast in a climate where it snows

bmw,

Check the area around your rear shock mounts, I've seen a few trucks that had frame rust problems in that specific area.

Come to Canada for rust. I should take pictures of some of the cars with gaping holes in the sides of the body and put them in my gallery.

I hate rust. the frames on these are tough as nails. It seems to be everything attached to the frame has no trouble rusting though

chado, come out to the east, you'll find the frame go as fast as the bodies here. belive me, i've fixed enough of them.

my experiances have been with the rear frame, where ever anything bolts or rivits to it, x-memebers, shock mounts, spring hangers, bumper mounts, ect... sometimes these trucks cracked over the rear wheels if they were used too hard.

upfront, the spring/shock towers tend to rust, as does the frame behind them, also the frame around the steering box.
also check the x-memeber the cab sits on, and the x-memeber in the cab it's self.
