I am a new ford enthusiast, and although I have rebuilt many cars, the explorer is new to me. I have recently bought a recoverd theft 2002 ford explorer xlt, although the car came with a keywich works for everything the car will not crank, I have been told that the key is not ¿programed for the car? this is why it will not turn over? Any suggestions??

There is a code somewhere in the glove compartment or something like that.

Maybe do a search in the explorer & electrical forums
for " Key code" or "Replacement key" & see what that brings up

 

My memory may be wrong here, but I think that if it doesn't crank, you've got a more basic problem. I think the PATS system prevents firing if its not programmed, but still allows cranking. Perhaps someone else can confirm this.

 

I have seen other posts here that say the engine will turn over without the PATS working. But, when I was programming an extra key for my 00, the engine would not turn over when using an unprogrammed key.......maybe this part of the system is model year specific???

Bob, do you know how the vehicle was stolen? It's my understanding that the PATS can't be defeated.

 

Is there a theft light that is flashing rapidly when you try to start it up?
