The Meaning of FE ?

I know I'm throwing myself to the wolves by asking this question, but here it goes...
What does "FE" stand for in reference to engines? I keep reading about these FE's, usually in reference to the 390 and 360. Since I have a 390, I'd like to at least have a clue.

Ya'll don't be too harsh now.

Nobody knows for sure. If somebody does, please back it up with some evidence.

Top contenders:

Ford/Edsel
Fairlane Engine

If you want to know more about your engine, and you haven't already seen it, there is a forum right on this website that covers the entire FE family, which is comprised of the 332 352 360 390 406 410 427 428. There is just a ton of info and expertise over there - just like here.

here is the link

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/f...?s=&forumid=51

I have also heard that FE stands for Ford Engine.

The Meaning of FE ?

That's what I was thinkning. Being in the Army, we use acronym's for everything and figuring them out becomes second nature. But this ain't Army stuff.

I did a search online and came up with nothing. Even found some Ford Motor websites, but nothing mentions what FE stands for. Even found a "History of the FE" but it didn't even say what it stood for. I reckon I'm happy with Ford Engine. Was just curious and didn't know.

I have looked at that forum, was just there awhile ago. Good Stuff. I'll be pulling my 390 out in the near future. Don't know if it needs rebuilding or not, but it does need some work.

Thanks Again.

By the way, nice truck you bought on ebay. Looks real good.

I swear I read some where that it means Ford/Edsel. I think maybe in this book I have called 100 years of the automobile.

I think it means Ford Edsel. It was introduced in 1958 in Ford, Edsel, and Thunderbird cars.

I can tell you one thing for certain, it does not stand for Fuel Efficient!

Thanks, SFC Davis.

I fly out in the morning to PA to go get it - I'm hoping it runs as good as it looks.

I'll let you know when I get back to Iowa.

SFCDAVIS. When my daughter was home on leave from the Army I thought she was speaking a different language. All phrases have abbreviations and abbreviations have to be turned into that Alpha code thing. Is this to confuse the enemy?lol

I never really thought about it. I joined when I was 18 right out of High School. I have spent my entire adult life in the Army and it just grows on you. The acronyms are infinite. I still learn new ones every day, after 16 years. I reckon it would be confusing to the enemy though, you may be on to something there. Sounds good to me. Alot of soldiers can speak complete sentences without ever saying an actual word. It is funny though.

I am still leaning towards the Ford Engine for FE.

The Meaning of FE ?

I just read the FE quick facts article. Ford Engine it is!! I guess to distinguish it as being a ford rather then another moniker. Back in the day displacements were all relativly the same. It made sense to put the FE at the end. With most of the larger displacement engines being close to each other. Or sharing the same displacement; 400,406,409,413,426,427,428. I widthdraw my previous statement!! Good article by the way, thanks.

When I ordered a bunch of parts for my 390 Fe, I asked the tech what it stood for. He said Ford/Edsel.
