Drivers license for illegals

Well, gov. Davis has signed the bill allowing illegal immigrants to obtain a california drivers license or an I.D. card. He says it will make our roads safer. This is the same bill he vetoed before citing police concerns about security. Before, gov. Davis wanted applicants to pass criminal background checks and in the process of obtaining legal documentation before he would sign. None of that was in this current bill. So why did he sign it?

We all know why! He hopes the hispanic community will vote to keep him in his job. Does this mean that illegal immigrants can now vote too? How convenient! Not in the the Oct. 7th recall election but in other elections, like presidental elections. All an illegal allien has to do now is go to the DMV and get a ballot by showing them their drivers license. Can you say Voter Fraud? Did Bill and Hill put him up to this? I hear Davis is taking advise from Clinton now days. Conspiracy theories anyone?

And what about buying a gun? A valid California drivers license is required for that too. No proof of legal status required. The drivers license was suppose to take care of that. Does this mean that the anti-gun types will use this as a means to enact more gun laws on law abiding CITIZENS of the United States? Take away our rights as citizens for the benefit of the illegal minority? Meanwhile, the criminal element, like illegal's, will keep their guns.

Oct. 7th can't come soon enough for me!

It's a bunch of BS if you ask me! I don't understand how giving them driver's licenses will make the roads safer. It's not like the driving test is so hard.

You nailed it exactly. He wants their votes, but you know what, alot of legal hispanics will see right thru it.

Time for Arnie to "terminate Davis"

what a load of crap. I drive 72 miles one way to work every day in southern California. Doesnt a drivers license mean you are a resident of California? Voting, buying firearms, hunting and fishing license. Allowing "ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS" to obtain a drivers license means that they are not "ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS" anymore.
If we can cause a Govorner to possibly lose his seat by obtaining signatures, Hopefully US CITIZENS can do something about this.

Yes we can. Arnold what's his name is against it and blasted Davis for pandering to Hispanics. Arnold said that if he is elected he said he would work on repealing that bone head decision. Like he has a chance in the sate legislature to pull that one off. The legislature is the one who passed it for gov. Davis to sign it. Arnold would have to do some wheeling and dealing to get it repealed in the legislature. The state attorney general also expressed concern citing the drivers license issue with respects to illegal alliens buying guns.

Tom McClintock also blasted Davis saying that the bill was dangerous. He also said he would work on repealing it right away, as early as Monday in fact. McClintock has a plan, one that could work whether or not he's elected governor. I don't remember the exact dead line but I think he's got 90 days to gather enough signatures, (190,000) to put it on a ballot measure. (Shrewd move on Davis's part to sign the bill on a late friday afternoon. Lost two days already). Then the puplic can vote on it. Look out for it in the news in the next few days. A referendum, that's the only way to fix this now.

McClintock also said that if elected gov. he would work on an appeal for Prop. 187 that was passed by California voters but ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge. Remember that one? Prop. 187 barred the state from providing public services to undocumented, (illegal), alliens. Even the majority of Hispanics supported that one but a federal judge issued a permanent injunction. Backers wanted to appeal to the U.S. supreme court but Davis setteled and it became a federal law. How does a judge make law from the bench?

Either way, the hispanic community is going to make a lot of noise. I say we can make enough noise of our own. I'm not anti immigration, just anti ILLEGAL immigration and giving ILLEGALS all the same benifets as citizens. Illegal means against the law. Are we to reward people for that? What do we say to those who come here legally and follow the law with respects to documentation and working toward citizenship? That they don't have to be honest and do that anymore? How many of us are fed up with our government officals giving in to a few whiners to dictate how the rest of us should toe the line, even if the line goes against the law and common sense? Basicly the hispanic community is saying to our governer, "our way or we won't vote for you". Well boo-hoo! Stay home then. I'll vote for a leader who enforces the law and takes into consideration all Californians, not a pandering weasel. [rant off]

Exclamation Drivers license for illegals

Article from the LA Times--just for a little persceptive on the issue...

Muddling Through Tough Issues Amid the Mud-Slinging
Steve Lopez

September 5, 2003

Before I tell you what I think about giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, I thought I should respond to a raft of complaints about my Wednesday column on Democrat Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante's so-called days as a student radical.

A.) As a California-born boy, I am already back where I came from.

B.) Personally, I don't think I'm scum or trash, but I'm biased.

C.) No, I haven't sold out for Bustamante. In fact, my early pick was Republican Peter Ueberroth, but he's been such a mumbling mope so far, he's making me look bad.

D.) You can't compare MEChA to the Ku Klux Klan, and to suggest as much is both naïve and insulting. The KKK lynched and terrorized an entire race for decades.

MEChA began as a Chicano rights group with what could be called a militant credo, and some of that language still exists on many of its Web sites. It's fair to suggest Bustamante should have renounced that aspect of MEChA, which is now more of a social club than anything else.

But he said "racial separatism is wrong," and chose not to further indulge the insinuation that he's a racist, or to prolong the focus on something that's got nothing to do with the problems that led to the recall.

There's a virus out there, though, that makes it difficult to focus on the substantive, and to have a discussion rather than a shouting match. Thanks to the drone of talk radio and cable TV blab fests, we've got a nation of parrots who see things in the most simplistic and divisive terms, especially when it comes to race.

Take the bill that will allow illegal immigrants to get driver's licenses.

If you think it's a good idea, you're called a commie. If you're against, you're a dinosaur and a bigot.

And where do I fall?

I'm in the murky middle. The bill makes sense in one respect, but I've got problems with it too.

First of all, I've got a problem with Gov. Gray Davis wavering until the recall, and then finally endorsing the bill in a desperate act of political pandering. It's proof positive — as if any more were needed — that the man's only true passion is his own survival.

What makes sense about driver's licenses for illegal immigrants is this:

If everyone from the president of the United States on down is going to wink and nod about porous borders so we can continue exploiting cheap labor, why not?

Does it seem rational to tell illegal immigrants, "OK, we'll look the other way when you cross the border, we'll educate your children, we'll take care of you when you're sick, and we'll gladly hire you to mow our lawns and clean our houses, but you can't drive?"

It's preposterous.

But so is the idea of sending out another invitation from California to the world's huddled masses.

Even though the Rand Corp. researcher I recently quoted said immigration produces a net gain for the California and U.S. economies, there are costs, as well, in rampant population growth:

Dirty air, respiratory disease, fouled beaches, depleted fisheries, water shortages, school shortages, housing shortages, and horrendous, hair-pulling, worse-all-the-time traffic.

How can you talk about driver's licenses for illegal immigrants without asking the question: How many people is too many for Los Angeles? How many is too many for California?

With a sour economy, a state budget crisis and low-income residents getting bounced out of work by new arrivals, why isn't anybody talking about controlling growth?

(Full disclosure: I'm not helping matters; my wife and I just had a baby).

Immigration is a federal concern, but that doesn't mean the governor and the state's congressional delegation can't fight for stricter immigration controls or, at the very least, the money to pay for services to illegal immigrants.

Loyola University research fellow David Ayon, who's planning a book on the subject, says politicians and public policy planners tend to focus on the stock of immigrants rather than the flow — like looking at a single frame instead of the whole movie.

"The entire border region has a population far in excess of what it can sustain," he said, speaking of the stretch from California to Texas on both sides of the U.S.-Mexican border. "People are living in abject circumstances in regions that are ugly and depressed."

Ayon, who grew up in El Paso to Mexican-born parents, said one way to stem the flow into California and the Southwest would be to encourage and help Mexico create better jobs away from its border cities.

"But we're very far from having any leadership and vision to try to undo the problems," he said. "We've made colossal errors with the bracero program and border industrialization, and at a minimum, we should at least try not to do any more harm."

In the middle of a campaign that's supposed to be about fixing the state's current problems and avoiding future disaster, wouldn't you rather hear this discussion than the one about whether Cruz Bustamante adequately denounced a student organization he joined in the 1970s?

Here's my offer:

Free space to the candidates who've got ideas on the subject worth printing. They know where to find me.

Well, now it seems they are going to give them something a little better.

The California State Assembly passed SB 328 on Thursday which allowes illegal, (undocumented) alliens to apply for community collage and have their tuition waived.

The bill says that those applying must have graduated high school, have a diploma or other degree such as a GED, have lived in the state for at least three years and has applied to become a legal resident. I wonder if this will apply to those immigrants who came here legally or became legal? Will they too be offered free collage because of their immigrant status? So if the drivers license bill becomes law next year, all anybody will need to establish residency is to have a drivers license. Just show up at the community collage with drivers license in hand and go to school, I'll pay for it. Mean while my kids who were born and raised here will work and pay their own way.

So as I understand it, a young person can come into this country ILLEGALLY in California with his/her parents, get public assistance, go to public school and now can go to collage too and it's all free. With the state is in such a financial mess how do they plan to pay for this? Raise our taxes? Or perhaps raise the tuition fees again on students who in order to pay for this. And the only students paying tuition will be the non immigrant students.

Will governer Davis sign this bad piece of legislation too? I wonder if he believes that since he is going to be recalled, that the only thing to do now is scuttle the ship.

It's amazing...no, it SUCKS how often I go to bed angry at the state of disarray California is in. My GF works for the L.A. Sherriff's union and we can't understand the fact that besides all this illegal immigrant love our fine governor feels is the only way to keep his job, police authorities cannot use records tied to the CDL to obtain info on any illegal immigrant that has a CDL. Preposterous.

How long until we see beat up Toyotas with "Powered by Illegal Immigrant" stickers across the rear window? Oct. 7th can't come soon enough for me either.

Don't you have to be a legal US citizen to get a social security card? or are we just handing those out to everyone too.

Because, you need one of those to get a drivers license...

Davis tried it all to get votes, and used this ploy to get the Latino's on his side. This bill requires applicants to provide a social security number that illegal immigrants cannot validly obtain. Does the DMV plan to verify these numbers? I doubt they are capable of doing this.

So much for Airport Security, now Sadaam's guru's can just come to California and get a license to get in the airport...We're going to be the next NY disaster.

Good thing Davis is out of here!

From what I have heard - anyone in Mexico that even begins to look as if they are middle-eastern in origin had better have all of their papers in order!

Evidently there are check points in place where the Mexican government is looking specifically for people who appear to be from questionable parts of the world, and checking them out thoroughly...

And this from what I understand, is because they do NOT under any circumstances want to lose the favorable arrangements of the NAFTA agreement.

Point to ponder, isn't it?
