96 F250 rear drum removal procedure?

Hi,

New to the Ford truck furum...

I am looking for information on how to remove the rear brake drums to service the brake pads. I have the 10.25" Sterling axle, I believe.

Looks as if I have to remove the axle, then remove some sort of locking nut that retains the hub? I am assuming that a special tool is required to remove it. My friend thinks he has one, but if he did, it is older than my truck. Has this same style locking mechanism been used for a while?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Actually, I don't think you need any tools. The drum should slide right off over the wheel studs. It seems that I got into this discussion before and thought as you do. Chiltons, Haynes, etc show that, but if I remember right, mine slid right off. Take a shop hammer and tap each side and see if it begins to move.

jbalestri is right. It just slides right over the hub. Not like the old dana 60's or corprate 14 bolts. If it will not slid right off just unadust the break shoe adjuster. on heach side. You can get to it with a flat screw driver by removing the small oval plug on the lower backside of each backing plate. Not shore which way loosens it. it is in an up and down motion. One side is opposite of the other when you figure the direction.

Thanks guys! These drums are absolutely frozen on there. Ayn suggestions on how to get them off? Is it okay to apply some heat to the drum around the hub? I hit the thing so hard that I chipped the area of the drum where it overlaps the backing plate...

Hit the surface around the studs. That may work. Try some PB blaster to. I think heat my boil the grease in the hub. To close proximity.

Make sure that the parking brake is not on. Spray some rust penetrant around the hub/drum interface. You might get away with some heat around it.

That what I was worried about...

Any recommendation on what combination of hammer and such to hit the drum with? Should I use some sort of large drift? I don't have any sort of dead-blow hammers or anything, but will buy one.

Thanks!

Just tap on the face of the drum around the studs with any old hammer you've got. Don't hit it on the sides though, or you may warp the drum.
