serpentine an older 460

Am considering converting my 79' 460 from a v belt to a serpentine system. I understand that 1990 was the first year for the serpentine in a 460. Can I just get the mounting hardware from a 90' and bolt it on? I know I'll have to change the alternator, power steering pump, and the water pump, and add the tensioner. Anybody out there done it already? Thanks

The "serpentine" belt system appeared in 1987.5 on the EFI engines. I wouldn't change unless you needed to for other reasons. BTW, it isn't truelly serpentine. It uses the 5 (6?) groove belts, buy they still run in simple loops.

March also makes a conversion kit for doing this swap. It's a little high in cost but the materials they use are top notch and the craftmanship is very nice.

Remember, serpentine systems use reverse rotation waterpumps too. I dont know if the timing cover is the same, its different on the 5.0's when you do the swap. Hope that helps.

The 460 with the OEM "serpentine" system does not use a reverse rotation water pump. As I mentioned above, the belts run in essentially the same configuration as the old V belts. The alternator / air pump belt gets tensioned by pivoting the alternator. The P/S and A/C belt has a tensioner pulley.
