Rear Tire Size - 1956 F100

I'm researching rear tire sizes that will fit inside the rear fenders of a 1956 F100. Stock fenders, stock rear axle width and suspension, and no mini tubs inside the bed. I've used Mid fifty's tire size utility and determined an 8 inch wide rim with a 4.5 inch back spacing is about the max I can use. I want to use a 17 inch diameter wheel so I am thinking of either a 235/55 17 tire or a 245/50 17 tire. Any input fitting tires inside the rear fenders is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

that depends a lot on how low you wanna go!? I had 275´s under my '56 but it sat pretty high...

but these will not fit inside the fenders.
If you are going low the tires have to fit inside the fenders... 255´s will fit with 8" rims when you have luck and find the perfect backspace

Yes I'm guessing ingo is about right I am using 275 55 17's on 10.5 rims and need to make more room but just barely I will be widening my box by 3" to accommodate

Thanks for the responses.

I don't want it too low. No lower than the truck in ingo's picture. It was an older restoration that I am getting back soon. It has the stock rear leaf springs that were re-arched and had the eye's reversed to lower it some which I want to keep using. Currently it has old L60-15 tires on 10" wide rims in the back and G60-15 tires on 8" wide rims in the front. These are equivalent to today's 275/60-15 and 245/60-15 tires. The front fit nicely but in the back they stick out of the fenders about 1.5" to 2" and on the inside there is about 1/2" clearance between the bed and the tire. As I've aged my taste has changed and I prefer them to fit inside the fenders. Plus as you can guess they clearly need replacing due to their age. So, first order is new tires and wheels all around. Especially since US Mags no longer make the wheels that are on it so I can't simply buy two more 8 inch wide wheels for the back. Too bad, there are probably less than 300 miles on those wheels.

It sounds like a 245 should fit inside the rear fender on an 8" wide rim with a 4.5" backspacing. I'll do some more research and probably have more questions. Any other input is welcome.

Thanks

255 70R15 8" wheel 3.75 backspace. I need to lower mine a bit but still should have clearance. I am not going real low just about 3".

Does this sound possible? if I put the 3 inch wider fenders on and a four inch tub lowered three inches in the back with stock springs and axle would a 20x14 rim fit? mid fifty’s chart says it will but I don’t know. anyone done this before or know anyone? Anyone also know the fatest front wheels I could get. Having a hard time finding what I want in the right width for less then 1000 a wheel know any websites?

With enough cutting and fitting anything is possible. that is a lot of tire for a stock rear end. Once you get that big it is going to be pricy for sure. I used tire size dot com to figure out tire sizing and profile. I built what I wanted then measured the space and went on a hunt to get a rim and tire to match.

Welcome . Tell us about yourself and your project . WE LIKE PICS . Without having anything here to measure I would suspect the frame will be your inside limit before your 4" tubs are . And as Marten said if you keep on widening you can fit whatever you want . I don't know what look your after but it sounds like a little more pro street . That size of rim is going to be very expensive regardless of where you get it . To me the wider rear fenders look awkward and 3" is allot so my suggestion would be to research as many pics as you can if you haven't already .

Here is a chart I did when calculating wheel dimensions for my 56 with C4 IRS/IFS. You can use your hub-to-hub width instead of the 62.5 inch number and adjust your wheel spacing accordingly.

Thanks for sharing your chart CharlieLed.
Would you please explain... the 74" dimension is that the space from side to side between the inside Fenders?
And what means the 5" dimension? Is that the middle of your 10" wide wheels?

Happy new year

Ingo

The 74 inch dimension is the outside fender to outside fender width. The determining factor in these measurements is the width of the rearend...given a C4 IRS of 62.5 inch width, and a 10 inch wide tire, a 5.0 inch backspace rim would make it all fit. If you have a rearend that is a different width then you will have to adjust your wheel dimensions accordingly.

1988 302 5.0 with 5 speed overdirve transmission from a 1992 f150 built past summer

Stripping the paint

Fit the front clip to get a good view of the truck

Putting 302 in to test mounting

Just put the cab on now ready for engine and mounting

Lowered the format as much as I could to the ground to put the cab on

Boxing in the whole frame eventually this was the first piece weld by me need to get a bit better with the tuning of the welder and moving it some more so it has a strong nice bead

Just married the trani and engine

Just got the heads back from the engine shop and slapped me on

Put crank on and called it a day

Got new water pump and put harmonic balencer on

Just got done being built

Got some rust like every where

here’s some pics so this is obviously a 1956 f100 I was given to by my grandpa when I was 11 for my bday. I’ve been working and dumping money into it since I’m now 14 almost 15 and struggling to get it done in time he keeps telling me I need patience but I don’t got that I want this on the road so bad I’ve had a passion for cars since I was born classic muscle cars have always been in my family but not driven till these past few years of them all being bought sold and restored right now we only have two runners but we need mine running so my grandpa dad and I can all go cruising in 2022 summer when my truck should be done. The truck has been in the family for decades and started being taken apart by my grandpa in 2006. When he handed it off to me not a single thing was together except the frame and the interior I stripped the frame full of rust by hand all summer long when I was 11 the next summer I built the frame up and the next built an engine. With me paying for the majority of it I’ve worked hard making everything I could and spending the least I could it’s an amazing truck and I’m fired up about it every day learning something new about it all the time hopefully the first start up will be this month can’t wait. Getting the rear end finsihed now and hopefully a roller by March. I want this to be a beast of a looking truck with not much power as it has a 302 5 speed manual. No doubt I’ll have the coolest ride in school. Although people call it my pavement princess I’m alright with that cuase they won’t be wrong it’ll be thrashed around on the roads but will
never be dirty and only be on dirt roads for half a mile every day I drive it.

Very nice . You've done very well so far and accomplished more than many of us have . Patience can often be a little difficult to come by but a lack of it also keeps us going . You could start a thread so you can keep us updated as we are definitely interested in following along . Maybe someone can help you with transferring your pics and descriptions to a build thread ( out of my capabilities ) . PS nothing wrong with a 302 5sp and easily upgraded .
