Trouble lining up pulleys on 302
#17
Check the numbers on that crank pulley and balancer. I see you went with the early passenger side inlet pump that spells trouble with the later (post 69) FEAD parts. Ford changed the pulley flange location in 1970 on the 4 bolt balancer so that it won't line the pulleys up to earlier pulleys. The only application that kept the earlier parts were the Broncos. Not sure why Ford did that. There were at least a dozen different FEAD setups on the small blocks over their 40 year run.

This outer accessory pulley bolts to the harmonic balancer.

Had same issue with the 68 289/302 in my 65 F100, had to use shims to get the pulleys aligned. After the second alternator bracket broke did some research and found I did not have a match set of pulleys? Went shopping for pulleys on E-bay and came across a Ford engine parts seller and emailed the casting #'s for each pulley, he was very helpful, said I had the option of swapping out the water pump pulley, or crank pulley. What an improvement!!
Perhaps if you post the pulley casting #'s a member can make suggestions?

Yea, that's the problem. The 1970-up balancer(4 bolt) has a different pulley flange offset than a pre 70. (3 bolt) You need a pre 70 waterpump pulley. The block numbers are irrelevant here. The balancer & pulley and the water pump pulleys and the rest of the FEAD need to be all pre 1970 small block parts

Measure the offset of that waterpump pulley from the center of the sheave to the end of the pulley face (the side that the fan spacer would sit against. I have a pulley here that might be the one you need. (The numbers on it are D1AE- AA. the distance from the timing cover flange to the center of this pulley is 3-3/4 if that helps) If it is, I'll send it to you. it's on that same motor on the stand in my shop and matches the double sheave crank pulley on the motor (3 bolt) but the inner sheave on this one is a much narrower one than yours, I doubt it would work with your power steering pump pulley. It appears to use a 3/8" wide belt. The outer sheave is for a 1/2" belt.

We're talking about the water pump pulleys here. not the P/S pulley. Not only that, in your haste to "help" you're mixing up part and engineering numbers. They're not the same thing. And posting all that stuff is not helping. Brings to mind "TMI" Too Much Information.
